Audemars Piguet The Watch Keepers is Audemars Piguet's own certified pre-owned (CPO) platform, launched on October 26, 2026. Sellers send a watch to AP, which authenticates and grades it, photographs it and lists it for sale at a fixed price or by bidding, and buyers receive a certificate of authenticity and a new two-year warranty. It starts in Switzerland and Europe, with other markets promised and no US date given in any coverage we read. AP has not published its seller fees. Press reports differ on the number of watches listed, and on who pays the commission.

How Audemars Piguet The Watch Keepers works

A seller registers, enters the watch's serial number and proves ownership, then sends the watch by insured courier to an AP service facility. AP watchmakers check it against the company's archives, evaluate its condition and grade the dial, case and bracelet on a scale of 1 to 5. The platform's grading page defines only the ends of the scale, with 5 as excellent aesthetic condition and 1 as more visibly worn, and says only watches graded 3 or above are listed.

AP then photographs the watch and writes the listing. The seller reviews it, picks a fixed price or bidding, and decides when it goes live. Monochrome and Watchonista both say the watch remains the seller's property and stays in AP's custody until it sells. SJX describes AP as "neither a buyer nor the seller, instead it is the facilitator," and finews says AP generally does not take inventory risk.

Watches are not serviced as a matter of course. Watchonista and Watch Collecting Lifestyle report that if watchmakers find a problem they recommend a service, billed separately to the seller, who can decline and have the watch returned. Anyone can browse, but registration and an identity check are needed to see prices, according to the site.

Which watches qualify, and what buyers get

The entry rule is that a watch must be at least two years past its first sale. Watchonista, Monochrome, SJX and finews all report this. JCK says "only AP watches from the past two years" qualify, which reads as the opposite. We treat the four-source version as correct and the JCK wording as a slip, but we could not read AP's terms to settle it.

Buyers register first, then receive a certificate of authenticity, a two-year warranty and a Watch Keepers travel pouch with each purchase. The watch is checked against AP's records, which is the central promise. Watchonista says AP confirmed that buyers pay nothing above the sale price. SJX takes a different view, saying costs will be borne by the buyer and/or seller, with no figures. The platform's FAQ lists the questions but we could not read the answers.

Scope is described as covering collections and eras. SJX says the opening inventory included gem-set Royal Oaks and a pink gold Jules Audemars Equation of Time configured for Vienna. The number listed is disputed: SJX and Watch Collecting Lifestyle say 42 at launch, while Watchonista, Monochrome and finews say about 100. A plausible reading is that 100 is the expected level and 42 the first count, though that is our interpretation.

Commission: what is and is not known

AP did not publish seller fees at launch, according to SJX and Watch Collecting Lifestyle. The most specific figures come from the Swiss newspaper NZZ, as relayed by finews on October 27. They give 20% on the first CHF 25,000 of the sale price, 15% on the next CHF 25,000 and 10% above CHF 50,000. A CHF 52,000 sale would therefore cost CHF 8,950 in commission, or 17.2%, which matches finews' example: 5,000 plus 3,750 plus 200.

Two caveats apply. Watch Collecting Lifestyle summarises the NZZ figures as a range of 10 to 20%, which is consistent with the tiers. And finews does not say who pays, while Watchonista reports that only sellers pay. We have not converted the Swiss franc amounts to US dollars because we did not retrieve a dated exchange rate.

We found no figure for how the commission compares with the dealer margins or fees at other platforms, so we do not make that comparison. If the NZZ tiers are right, the effective rate falls as the price rises, which would favour sellers of high-value references. That is interpretation, not reported fact.

How it compares with Rolex and other programmes

Rolex announced its Certified Pre-Owned programme on December 1, 2022. Monochrome reported that it runs through official retailers, started at Bucherer boutiques in six European countries, covers watches more than three years old and comes with a two-year international guarantee issued by Rolex. Watch Collecting Lifestyle says Rolex later cut its threshold to two years in May 2025, a claim we could not corroborate. The contrast is structural: Rolex leaves pricing and customers to dealers, while AP runs the platform itself and, per finews, takes a middle path as facilitator.

Vacheron Constantin presented its programme in November 2024 with Watchfinder, a Richemont company, and offers a digital passport and a minimum two-year warranty, according to Monochrome. Monochrome also names Jaeger-LeCoultre, MB&F and F.P. Journe among brands with programmes, and finews says Richard Mille has operated in this area since 2015. We did not retrieve sources on Patek Philippe or Cartier programmes, so we say nothing about them.

On scale, Monochrome cites a figure of US$590 million for Rolex CPO sales in 2025 from LuxeConsult and Morgan Stanley. We could not check that against the original report, and no comparable figure exists for AP. See our Vacheron Constantin history for that brand's background.

What it may mean for the secondary market

This section is interpretation. By authenticating and listing watches itself, AP puts a brand-run price on a reference that, until now, was set by dealers and auctions. Watchonista argues that a sale below retail on an AP-run platform would be harder for the brand to attribute to the grey market. The two-year rule and the 3-or-above grading threshold also screen out recent flips and worn pieces.

Resta told NZZ that AP does not distinguish between boutique customers and CPO platform customers, according to finews, so purchases are recorded in the same customer history. For buyers, the draw is the AP warranty and archive check. For sellers, the cost is the commission and a possible service charge. Our watch price increases report covers list prices, and the Geneva auction preview covers the auction channel.

Market context from finews, citing LuxeConsult's 2026 report, is that pre-owned watch sales grew about 7% in 2025 on a comparable basis, with 8 to 11% annual growth expected. Trade conditions also matter, and our Swiss exports report covers the US tariff. Until fees are confirmed and results appear, effects on prices remain unproven.

Background

Audemars Piguet is based in Le Brassus, and the brand's story is in our Audemars Piguet history. Its best-known model, the Royal Oak, is the reference most often discussed in the context of resale, and the Royal Oak Jumbo page covers the original design.
