Richard Mille is the Swiss watch brand that turned a tonneau-shaped case, exotic materials and athlete partnerships into one of the most expensive names in watchmaking. Founded in 2001 by Richard Mille and Dominique Guenat and based in Les Breuleux, it is, by Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult's 2026 estimate, one of the top six brands by revenue. This history follows its founders, signature watches, motorsport ties, business numbers and how to buy one, with sources and dates for every price.

Richard Mille before the brand: Finhor, Matra and Mauboussin

Richard Mille was born on 13 February 1951 in Draguignan, France, according to Wikipedia. Beckertime says he studied marketing at IUT Besançon and started as an export manager at Finhor, a watch company that Matra bought; Wikipedia dates his arrival at Finhor to 1974 and Matra's purchase to 1981. He became export director at Matra and then general manager of the watchmaking division of Mauboussin, the French jeweller. Wikipedia says he left Matra for Mauboussin in 1992.

His career, as these sources describe it, ran through export management and general management at established watch and jewellery groups rather than through a family workshop. Beckertime says he left Mauboussin in 1999 to create his own brand, while Wikipedia says he and Dominique Guenat planned the brand across 1998 and 1999 and that development took about three years before the 2001 debut. The two accounts are compatible: the idea and the preparation sit in the late 1990s, and the first watch followed in 2001.

Wikipedia adds that Mille joined the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie in 2007, which put him on the governance side of the industry as well as the brand side. Wikipedia also lists him as chairman and CEO of the privately held Richard Mille group. The same article carries maintenance tags for possible undisclosed paid editing and unsourced statements, so every Wikipedia fact in this history is cross-checked against at least one other source where one was available.

2001: the RM 001 Tourbillon and the tonneau case

The brand's own site calls the RM 001 Tourbillon the first watch to carry Richard Mille's name. Wikipedia says it was shown at Baselworld in 2001 as a manually wound tourbillon. Beckertime gives more of the engineering story: the three-part tonneau case, held together with grade 5 titanium spline screws, was made by Donzé Baume of the Vallée de Joux after more than three years of development, and the movement was developed with Renaud et Papi, now APRP, after Audemars Piguet took a controlling interest in that specialist. Beckertime also credits the RM 001 with the first sapphire case back and sapphire dial in the brand's line, and a titanium baseplate.

The curved tonneau shape became the brand's signature. Later references such as the RM 011 and the extra-thin RM 67-01 use the same tonneau shape, which is how the brand's watches are usually recognised.

On the founding date, sources disagree. Wikipedia and a 2016 Japanese motorsport report both give 2001. A SwissWatches Magazine visit to the manufacture says the brand was founded in 1999 by Mille, described as the French creative partner, and Guenat, described as the Swiss technical one. Wikipedia adds that the operating company, Horométrie, was registered in Switzerland by October 2001 with the two men as equal partners. This page uses 2001, the year of the first watch and of the company registration, and flags 1999 as the date some sources give for the project's start.

Mille and Guenat: how the partnership is structured

The founding arrangement is a division of roles. Per SwissWatches Magazine, Dominique Guenat took over management of Guenat SA Montres Valgine in 1991, a company that it says has existed in Les Breuleux for more than 110 years. SwissWatches Magazine describes Mille as the French creative partner and Guenat as the Swiss technical one.

Wikipedia lists four companies in the group: Horométrie SA for distribution, Guenat SA Montres Valgine for design and assembly, ProArt for components such as cases and some movement parts, and VMDH for dials and decoration in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In April 2013, per Wikipedia, Mille and Guenat acquired 90% of Prototypes Artisanals SA, later ProArt, with Alain Varrin keeping 10%. Dominique Guenat also appears in the Europa Star report on the 2012 Le Mans Classic as an associate and friend of Mille who raced there, finishing third in Grid 6 in a 1976 Lola T286.

Audemars Piguet's role is the least clear part of the structure. Wikipedia says Audemars Piguet was a partner from 1999 and held a stake by 2007, though the dating of that second claim is unclear. In a June 2013 Reuters-sourced report, SJX said Audemars Piguet would keep a 10% stake if a deal with PPR went ahead. SwissWatches Magazine says only that Audemars Piguet provides support for quality and precision. The size and current terms of that stake are not confirmed by any source we could fetch.

Les Breuleux: the manufacture and its materials

The manufacture sits in Les Breuleux , a village in the Swiss Jura. SwissWatches Magazine counted 215 employees across two manufacture buildings, with a third building opened in 2020 for technical offices, R&D and artistic management. Building one makes cases and movement components such as main plates, bridges and screws; building two houses movement production. Five watchmakers were in four-year apprenticeships at the time of the visit.

The same visit reported an in-house production rate of 80%, with in-house movement production above 60% and the remainder coming from Manufacture Vaucher and APLL. That figure is worth keeping in mind next to the marketing language around the brand. SwissWatches Magazine also reported 14 in-house calibres, the first introduced in 2012, whereas Beckertime places the CRMA1 debut in the RM 037 in 2011. The source conflict is a one-year difference and probably reflects different definitions of an in-house calibre.

Materials are central to the brand's identity. Carbon TPT and Quartz TPT come from North Thin Ply Technology, where SwissWatches Magazine says Richard Mille is a major shareholder. Graph TPT, a graphene composite, arrived with the RM 50-03 in 2017, based on research at the University of Manchester's National Graphene Institute. The same article says one sapphire case takes 40 days of work plus 350 hours of polishing, and that design to completion takes three to five years.

Signature watches: from the RM 011 to the RM UP-01

The RM 011 Felipe Massa was released in 2007, according to both a Phillips lot essay and a Sotheby's catalogue. Phillips calls it the brand's first automatic chronograph wristwatch, with a self-winding skeletonised movement by Vaucher and a flyback chronograph module by Dubois-Dépraz, in a 50 mm tonneau case. We could not confirm from a fetched source when production of the original RM 011 ended.

The extra-thin RM 67-01 was first unveiled in 2015 in plain titanium as a tonneau automatic, per SJX. The RM 67-02 followed with national-flag colourways; SJX's May 2018 launch report gave case dimensions of 38.7 by 47.52 mm, a 7.8 mm height and a weight of 32 g with strap. In 2020 the brand introduced the RM 72-01, which SwissWatches Magazine calls its first in-house chronograph, using the CRMC1 calibre.

The headline-grabbing piece is the RM UP-01 Ferrari , announced in July 2022. SwissWatches Magazine and The Drive both report a 1.75 mm case height, a run of 150 pieces and a record for the thinnest mechanical watch, 0.05 mm thinner than Bulgari's Octo Finissimo Ultra. The price was CHF 1.7 million excluding VAT, or $1,888,000 per The Drive (about $2.05 million at the October 2026 average of 1 CHF = 1.206 USD, so the dollar figure reported in 2022 and today's conversion differ).

Athletes as test labs: Massa, Nadal and the shock-resistance story

Richard Mille built its reputation by putting complicated watches on athletes. Beckertime says the RM 009, made for Felipe Massa in 2005, was made of ALUSiC and weighed 28 g without strap, while Wikipedia says 29 g.

The defining partnership is with Rafael Nadal . Beckertime and Robb Report Australia date the RM 027 to 2010, when Nadal won the French Open, US Open and Wimbledon. Robb Report says it weighed under 20 g with strap. Wikipedia dates the RM 027 to 2007 in one place and Nadal's sponsorship to 2010 elsewhere, so the 2010 launch is the better supported date. Robb Report lists a sequence of Nadal tourbillons: the RM 27-01 (2013), RM 27-02 (2015, with a unibody baseplate fused to the case), RM 27-03 (2017, rated to 10,000 G), RM 27-04 (2020, 12,000 G) and the RM 27-05 Flying Tourbillon (2024, 11.5 g, 14,000 G). It suggested the RM 27-05 could be the last co-design with Nadal.

Other recent partners include Ilia Topuria, named by Wikipedia as an RM 67-02 ambassador in March 2026.

Motorsport: Le Mans Classic, McLaren and Ferrari

Motorsport is the other pillar. Europa Star reports that Richard Mille has been principal partner and official timekeeper of the Le Mans Classic since its first edition in 2002, and Watchonista describes the sponsorship as announced a year after the brand's founding. It produces special editions, including an RM 72-01 LMC limited to 150 pieces, per Watchonista.

On 19 February 2016, according to a Japanese motorsport report, McLaren Honda announced a 10-year partnership with Richard Mille, with Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button to wear the brand's watches. Quill & Pad reports that the first joint watch, the RM 50-03 McLaren F1, came in December 2017. The same article notes that the brand supported Haas from 2016 to 2020.

In February 2021, per Quill & Pad, Richard Mille took over the Ferrari partnership from Hublot, with an official multiyear deal covering Formula 1, endurance racing, Competizioni GT, Ferrari Challenge, the Driver Academy and esports. Our own history of the Hublot-Ferrari partnership covers what came before. The first joint watch was the RM UP-01 Ferrari in 2022, and Watchonista lists the RM 43-01 Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph Ferrari as the second, from 2025. Quill & Pad also places Charles Leclerc with the brand since his karting days. For which drivers wear what in 2026, see our F1 drivers watches guide.

Today's business: revenue, ownership and succession

Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult's ninth annual report, published in February 2026 and covering 2025, estimates Richard Mille at CHF 1.75 billion in wholesale revenue, about 5,950 watches, growth of 13% and a 3.6% share, per Loupe's summary (about $2.1 billion at 1 CHF = 1.206 USD, the October 2026 average). Loupe puts the average selling price at CHF 294,000, around $355,000. The figures are analyst estimates, not brand-reported data. The Peak describes the brand as sixth by estimated revenue at about CHF 1.7 billion, and Insight Luxury notes that Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille together held 49.1% of Swiss watch value.

One audited number exists. City AM reported on 13 August 2025 that the brand's EMEA arm, based in London, had 2024 turnover of CHF 404.4 million, up from CHF 378.7 million, and pre-tax profit of CHF 158.4 million, up from CHF 147.1 million. The board said first-half 2025 sales were in line with expectations and cited long waiting lists for new and existing models.

On ownership, the brand remains privately held per Wikipedia. In 2013, SJX reported on 18 June, citing Reuters, that PPR was in talks for a 51% stake, valuing it at CHF 340 to 400 million, while Wikipedia says Mille turned down a Kering proposal for 51% that year. We found no report of an ownership change between 2024 and 2026. SwissWatches Magazine says Mille is slowly retiring and that his children are taking over the company; no other source we could fetch confirms that.

On screen and at auction

Richard Mille has become shorthand for conspicuous wealth on screen. Our Succession watches guide covers Kendall Roy's RM 67-01 in season 4, and our Your Friends & Neighbors guide covers the RM 011 Felipe Massa stolen in the show's second episode, each with its own sourcing. The shows are named in the guides' own descriptions; check those pages for the evidence behind each identification.

At auction, a Phillips lot essay shows a circa-2011 titanium RM 011 selling for $152,400 against an estimate of $90,000 to $180,000; Wristcheck dates that sale to June 2024. Antiquorum's RM 52-01 Vanitas Vanitatum skull tourbillon sold in 2022: SwissWatches Magazine gives CHF 6,661,098.26 on 19 July 2022, while a Saatolog report gives €5,450,000 on 19 June (its headline says dollars, its body euros). The sources do not explain the gap in date and amount. Saatolog calls it the most expensive Richard Mille sold at auction. For current Geneva results see our October 2026 auction preview.

How to collect Richard Mille

New versus pre-owned. Wristcheck (September 2026) says Richard Mille sells only through its own boutiques, mostly to waitlists, with no public price list. WatchesOff5th (February 2026) describes an allocation model in which limited pieces go to existing clients with purchase histories, and City AM reported long waiting lists in August 2025. For most buyers, the practical entry point is the pre-owned market, where dealers and auction houses list complete sets.

Price evidence. Pre-owned prices can sit above or below retail. Phillips sold a Zverev RM 67-02 for $381,000 in New York in June 2026, about double the $185,000 January 2024 catalogue price, per Wristcheck. By contrast WatchesOff5th says an unworn RM 010 in rose gold trades around $140,000, below its original retail. Wristcheck also says plain titanium RM 65-01 examples trade softer than composite ones. Treat every figure as a snapshot: these are dealer and auction numbers, not official prices.

Authenticity and care. Buy from a dealer who authenticates in person and provides box, papers and service history, or from an auction house. Wristcheck suggests checking that a first-generation RM 011 carries RM011-FM on the case back and, for the RM 030, that the 12 o'clock indicator changes state as the reserve crosses 50 and 40 hours. Those checks come from a seller, so independent authentication is still sensible. For wider market context see our 2026 watch price increases and Swiss export and US tariff coverage.

Myths and mix-ups, corrected

  • Myth: Richard Mille is an old Swiss house. The first watch, the RM 001, appeared at Baselworld in 2001, and Wikipedia gives 2001 as the founding year. One source says 1999; SwissWatches Magazine says the Guenat company in Les Breuleux is over 110 years old, but that is the production company, not the brand.
  • Myth: you can buy any Richard Mille at an authorised dealer. Wristcheck says it sells only through its own boutiques, mostly to waitlists; WatchesOff5th describes allocation to existing clients.
  • Myth: Richard Mille is owned by a luxury conglomerate. Wikipedia lists it as private. A 51% stake sale was discussed in 2013 per SJX and Wikipedia, but Wikipedia says Mille declined; Audemars Piguet is reported as a partner or minority shareholder.
  • Myth: every Richard Mille is an in-house movement. SwissWatches Magazine reports about 80% in-house production and over 60% in-house movements, with the rest from Manufacture Vaucher and APLL.
  • Myth: every Richard Mille rises in value. Not according to dealer data: WatchesOff5th says an unworn rose-gold RM 010 trades below original retail, and Wristcheck says plain titanium RM 65-01s trade softly.
  • Myth: the RM 027 Nadal watch dates from 2007. Wikipedia gives 2007 once, but Beckertime and Robb Report date it to 2010, the year Nadal won three majors.
