Hublot and Ferrari: Art of Fusion Meets the Prancing Horse

The Hublot–Ferrari partnership, formalised in 2011 , is one of the most visible brand collaborations in luxury watchmaking. It pairs two brands whose identities are built on material innovation, performance credentials, and aggressive marketing: Hublot with its Art of Fusion material philosophy, Ferrari with its carbon fibre construction and internal combustion mythology. The result has been a series of co-branded watches, Formula 1 timing partnerships, and the MP-05 LaFerrari — a watch that used Ferrari's hybrid hypercar as its mechanical inspiration.

The Strategic Logic

Watch brands have partnered with automotive manufacturers throughout watchmaking history — Breitling with Bentley, TAG Heuer with McLaren and Porsche, Girard-Perregaux with BMW. The logic: both industries produce precision mechanical objects for wealthy buyers who value performance and craftsmanship. Automotive partnerships give watch brands access to a passionate, high-disposable-income audience; they give automotive brands a luxury goods partner that reinforces their premium positioning.

For Hublot specifically, the Ferrari partnership reinforced two elements of the brand's identity:
1. Material innovation: Ferrari's expertise in carbon fibre, titanium, and composite materials mirrors Hublot's Art of Fusion approach. Both brands are committed to using non-traditional materials in products where traditional materials would suffice but where the alternative provides better performance.
2. Performance credibility: Ferrari's racing heritage provides a performance narrative that luxury watchmaking — even with tourbillons and chronographs — cannot generate from horological precedent alone.

Official Partnership — 2011

The partnership was announced in 2011 , with Hublot becoming the official timekeeper of Scuderia Ferrari — Ferrari's Formula 1 racing team. The timing role: Hublot timepieces are worn by Ferrari's pit crew and engineering team during Grand Prix weekends, and the Hublot brand appears on Ferrari's hospitality infrastructure at race weekends.

Formula 1 provides Hublot with approximately 20 international race weekends per year, each providing television and media coverage in which the Hublot brand appears in the Ferrari context. The exposure value — calculating the equivalent cost of purchasing the media time at standard advertising rates — is substantial.

Big Bang Ferrari — Co-Branded References

The partnership has produced numerous co-branded watch references under the Big Bang Ferrari designation:

Big Bang Ferrari: The base co-branded reference, featuring a Ferrari red colour scheme, carbon fibre elements, and the prancing horse logo on the dial. Available in multiple materials (titanium, king gold, carbon).

Big Bang Ferrari Magic Gold: A version in Hublot's proprietary Magic Gold alloy — an 18-carat gold composite resistant to scratching, developed in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

Classic Fusion Ferrari GT: A thinner, less aggressive expression of the partnership — the Classic Fusion case with Ferrari GT design elements for buyers who prefer the Ferrari association without the Big Bang's visual intensity.

MP-05 LaFerrari — The Technical Centrepiece

The MP-05 LaFerrari (2013) is the partnership's most technically significant product. The watch was developed simultaneously with Ferrari's LaFerrari hybrid hypercar, using the car's engineering philosophy as the movement's structural inspiration:

The LaFerrari car used a KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) with a capacitor stack to store regenerative braking energy and deploy it for additional power. The MP-05 movement used 11 series-coupled mainspring barrels to store mechanical energy — a barrel stack in direct conceptual parallel with the car's capacitor stack.

The result: 50-day power reserve, required winding by electric screwdriver, and a case design that echoes Ferrari's carbon fibre and titanium construction. The MP-05 is produced in very small series (fewer than 20 pieces) at prices above CHF 300,000.

Formula 1 Timing Role

Beyond branded watches, Hublot serves as official timekeeper for Formula 1's race timing infrastructure at selected Grand Prix weekends. The timing function requires precision timing systems accurate to thousandths of a second — the margin by which F1 race positions are determined.

This timing role gives Hublot a functional, rather than merely decorative, presence in Formula 1 — the brand's involvement goes beyond logo placement to genuine chronometry, reinforcing the claim that Hublot watches are precision instruments.

Hublot's Broader Sports Strategy

The Ferrari partnership is the most prominent of Hublot's sports partnerships, but not the only one. Hublot has simultaneously maintained official partnerships with:

  • FIFA (football's world governing body) — Official timekeeper of the World Cup since 2010
  • UEFA — Official timekeeper of the Champions League
  • The NBA — Official timekeeper for the basketball association
  • Boxing promoters — Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and others

The strategy is consistent: official timing + athlete and team ambassador relationships + branded watches for each sporting context. The result is a brand with sports presence disproportionate to its production volume — Hublot reaches audiences that traditional luxury watch media would not penetrate.
