Hamilton American Classic: Art Deco Cushions, the Boulton, Intra-Matic and Pan Europ

The Hamilton American Classic collection gathers the brand's heritage designs from its decades as an American manufacturer: Art Deco shaped watches from the 1920s and 1930s, mid-century dress watches, the micro-rotor Thin-O-Matic and Intra-Matic , and the 1970s Pan Europ chronograph. In 2026 it gained the Cushion Mechanical, a revival of the cushion watches seen in Oppenheimer.

Art Deco Origins: The Cushion

In the 1920s and 1930s Hamilton built a wide range of shaped wristwatches, among them rectangular, tonneau and cushion cases. The cushion, a square with softly rounded corners, appeared around 1919–1926, in plain and engraved versions. In Oppenheimer (2023), Cillian Murphy wore a vintage Hamilton Cushion B , alongside an Endicott and a Lexington, and Matt Damon wore a Military Ordnance and a Piping Rock. The film's success led Hamilton to the 2026 Cushion Mechanical : 30mm and 34mm cases just 8.1mm thick, with the new hand-wound H-42 calibre (ETA 7001 base, 57-hour power reserve), priced at US$995 in steel and US$1,095 in gold PVD. The Boulton

The Boulton , introduced in 1941 , is a rectangular watch with a stepped, curved case that has been revived several times since the 1980s. Harrison Ford wore an American Classic Boulton in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). Today's Boultons are quartz and cost roughly US$795–$1,075.

Thin-O-Matic and Intra-Matic

In the 1960s Hamilton's Swiss partner Büren supplied an ultra-thin automatic movement with a micro-rotor , a small winding weight set into the movement rather than on top of it. Hamilton used it in the Thin-O-Matic (Calibre 666) and, after it bought Büren in 1966, in the Intra-Matic . The modern Intra-Matic Auto, in 38mm and 42mm, recreates that slim 1960s look with a conventional automatic movement for US$845–$1,095.

The Intra-Matic Chronograph H (around 2018) uses the hand-wound H-51 chronograph movement with a 60-hour power reserve in a 40mm case, priced at US$2,045–$2,095. An Intra-Matic Auto Chrono appeared in The Matrix Resurrections (2021).

The Pan Europ and the Calibre 11

In March 1969 Hamilton-Büren, Heuer, Breitling and Dubois-Dépraz unveiled the Calibre 11 , one of the first automatic chronograph movements, built on Büren's micro-rotor base. Hamilton put it in the 1971 Pan Europ , a cushion-cased chronograph that sits alongside the Heuer Monaco and Breitling Chrono-Matic as a Calibre 11 classic. The Pan Europ chronograph was revived in 2011 and the automatic in 2014; the 2023 Pan Europ Day-Date uses the H-30, and the automatic costs about US$1,195. The 2019 Chrono-Matic 50 (1,972 pieces, US$2,595) also celebrated the Calibre 11.

Spirit of Liberty and the PSR

The collection also includes the Spirit of Liberty , an H-10 automatic whose strap is engraved with a quotation from Andrew Hamilton, the lawyer after whom the company was named, and the digital PSR, a revival of the 1970 Pulsar.
