Oppenheimer (2023) is a one-brand watch film. Director Christopher Nolan worked with Hamilton to put period watches on the wrists of J. Robert Oppenheimer, his wife Kitty and General Leslie Groves, and the result is six vintage models, none of them from a current catalogue. This guide covers which watch goes with which character, how they were found, what the sources do and do not tell us, and the Hamilton Cushion released in 2026 because viewers asked for the watch Cillian Murphy wears.

The short answer

Six vintage Hamiltons are named for three characters: the Cushion B , Endicott and Lexington for Oppenheimer, a 1947 Lady Hamilton A-2 for Kitty, and a Piping Rock and Military Ordnance for Groves. The brand and models are well documented, but almost all coverage traces back to Hamilton itself, and we found no scene-by-scene placement, reference numbers, or models for the rest of the cast. No watch figures in the plot.

Who wears what: quick reference

Character (actor) Watches
J. Robert Oppenheimer(Cillian Murphy) Hamilton Cushion B (1930s), gold-plated, about 26.7 mm square, cream dial, brown lizard strap; Hamilton Endicott (1940s), gold-plated, about 27.8 mm, champagne dial, brown calf strap; Hamilton Lexington (1940s), gold- or silver-plated, about 29 mm, black dial, green calf strap
Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer(Emily Blunt) Hamilton Lady Hamilton A-2 (1947), 14k gold per most sources, about 13.5 x 15 mm, white dial
Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves(Matt Damon) Hamilton Piping Rock (1920s design), steel, about 30 mm, champagne dial, black calf strap; Hamilton Military Ordnance (1940s), steel, about 32 mm, black dial, green nylon strap
Other characters(Robert Downey Jr. (Lewis Strauss), Gary Oldman (Harry Truman), Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett and others) No documented watch

How we label the evidence

Confirmed means a costume designer, prop department, the brand or the show itself said so, or multiple reputable outlets agree and cite a source. Reported means a single reputable outlet or database reports it. We leave out other fan speculation, and where sources disagree we say so. All prices are in US dollars and are indicative; check current listings before buying.

J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy)

Oppenheimer wears three Hamilton watches at different points in the film, all gold- or silver-plated dress models in an Art Deco style. Hamilton says it did not draw on its archive: it asked collectors in its network to supply period pieces. Which scene uses which watch is not documented in any source we read, and we found no record of what watch the real Oppenheimer wore.

Watch Reference Evidence Where you see it Price (US)
Hamilton Cushion B (1930s), gold-plated, about 26.7 mm square, cream dial, brown lizard strap Not given Confirmed Worn by Oppenheimer; Hamilton calls it a restored 1930s watch. Its cushion case dates to 1919. Sizes come from one outlet (WatchTime) Film-correct examples not priced in our sources
Hamilton Endicott (1940s), gold-plated, about 27.8 mm, champagne dial, brown calf strap Cal. 987A on a comparable vintage example Confirmed Worn by Oppenheimer at different points in the film Comparable 28.5 mm gold-filled Endicott: $250 asking, listed sold out (watch dealer, undated page, retrieved October 14, 2026)
Hamilton Lexington (1940s), gold- or silver-plated, about 29 mm, black dial, green calf strap Not given Confirmed Worn by Oppenheimer at different points in the film No price found

Hamilton names the three watches but not the scenes, references or their owners. Sizes and strap colours come from one outlet and should be treated as indicative.

Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt)

Kitty wears an ornate bracelet-style Hamilton Lady Hamilton A-2 from 1947. Several outlets say 14k gold, one lists it as gold-plated, so the case material is unsettled.

Watch Reference Evidence Where you see it Price (US)
Hamilton Lady Hamilton A-2 (1947), 14k gold per most sources, about 13.5 x 15 mm, white dial A-2 Confirmed Worn by Kitty Oppenheimer; no scene is cited. Plating versus solid gold is disputed between outlets No price found

The brand, model and year are consistent across sources. The 14k versus gold-plated question is not.

Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves (Matt Damon)

Groves is given two steel Hamilton watches in a military register. The Piping Rock was introduced in 1928, and a 2019 auction lot description says Yankees players received one after winning the 1928 World Series. Hamilton's own page leaves it unclear whether its “black service watch” is the Military Ordnance.

Watch Reference Evidence Where you see it Price (US)
Hamilton Piping Rock (1920s design), steel, about 30 mm, champagne dial, black calf strap Not given Confirmed Worn by Groves; no scene is cited No price found for a film-correct example
Hamilton Military Ordnance (1940s), steel, about 32 mm, black dial, green nylon strap Not given Confirmed Worn by Groves; no scene is cited No price found

Sizes and straps come from two outlets that mostly agree. One reviewer names the Piping Rock as his favourite of the six.

Other characters (Robert Downey Jr. (Lewis Strauss), Gary Oldman (Harry Truman), Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett and others)

Two outlets say other guest stars were each given one or more vintage Hamiltons, but no source we read names the models. We could not open the main film-watch databases, so this is an absence of sources, not proof of which watches appear.

Cast per Wikipedia includes Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock, Casey Affleck as Boris Pash, Kenneth Branagh as Niels Bohr and Benny Safdie as Edward Teller. No watch is identified for any of them. One search summary mentioned a Hamilton Boulton on many wrists, but we could not confirm it in any page we opened, so we leave it out.

How the watches were found, and the 2026 Cushion

Sourcing. Hamilton's July 10, 2023 press release says finding the watches was “no easy task.” The brand did not use its archive and asked its collector network instead, which widened the range of styles available. Nolan said Hamilton's team were “incredibly helpful” in securing appropriate watches. Hamilton adds that the watches worn in the film are not for sale. Nolan's earlier work with the brand includes the Khaki Field “Murph” watch for Interstellar; see our Interstellar watches guide.

Costume context. Ellen Mirojnick designed the costumes. In a published interview she describes aiming for a period look that was “so close, but not on the nose,” and says Nolan asked that nobody but Oppenheimer wear a hat. That interview does not mention watches, so we cannot attribute the watch choices to her. The sources credit Hamilton and Nolan.

The Cushion. In 2026 Hamilton launched the American Classic Cushion mechanical collection, saying it responded to unexpected demand for the watch Murphy wears. It is a new design, not a reissue: a hand-wound Cal. H-42 based on the ETA 7001, with a 57-hour reserve, in 30 mm and 34 mm cases. Hamilton prices steel references at $995 and gold-PVD ones at $1,095. Gear Patrol, dated October 2, 2026, and Hamilton's US page said “available soon,” while Monochrome said the watches were available immediately, so check stock before planning a purchase. Our news report on the Cushion has more.

Collecting. Because the production watches cannot be bought, the realistic route is a vintage Hamilton of the same model. We found only one dated-in-retrieval dealer price, $250 for a gold-filled Endicott, and no sold-price series, so we cannot say how much film demand has moved the market.

Myths and mix-ups, corrected

  • “Nolan used Hamilton's current watches.” Coverage says the production used vintage pieces sourced from collectors, not the current catalogue or Hamilton's archive.
  • “The 2026 Cushion is the film watch.” It is a new design inspired by the vintage Cushion B, with a new movement and larger options. It is not a reissue.
  • “Oppenheimer wore a Hamilton in real life.” We found no source documenting the real Oppenheimer's watch. The Hamilton choice is the production's.
  • “The Lady Hamilton is solid gold.” Most outlets say 14k gold, but one lists it as gold-plated, so the case material is unsettled.
  • “The Murph watch is in Oppenheimer.” The Khaki Field Murph is from Interstellar. Only the vintage Hamiltons above are named for Oppenheimer.
