Hamilton Ventura: The First Electric Watch, From Elvis to Men in Black

The Hamilton Ventura is the watch that launched the electric age. Unveiled on January 3, 1957 , it housed the Hamilton Electric 500 , the world's first battery-powered wristwatch movement, in an asymmetric triangular case unlike anything else on the market. Elvis Presley made it famous in Blue Hawaii , Men in Black made it famous again, and it is now the signature design of Hamilton.

1957: The Electric 500

Hamilton had spent a decade developing a watch powered by a battery instead of a mainspring. It unveiled the result at the Savoy Plaza Hotel in New York before more than 120 reporters: the Calibre 500 , in which a small battery powered a coil on the balance wheel. The first two models were the Ventura and the Van Horn , both in 14k gold; the Ventura sold for about $200. The Calibre 500's electrical contacts proved troublesome, and the improved Calibre 505 replaced it in 1961. Hamilton made roughly 350,000 Electric watches over 12 years, before Bulova's tuning-fork Accutron and then quartz overtook the technology.

Richard Arbib's Design

The Ventura's case was the work of Richard Arbib , an industrial designer who had worked on cars for General Motors and on Century speedboats. Its shield-like asymmetric shape, with the dial and crown offset to the right, captured the optimism of 1950s car styling and the space race. Hamilton built other Electric models — the Pacer, the Van Horn and the Titan among them — but the Ventura became the design everyone remembered.

Elvis Presley and Blue Hawaii

Elvis and the Ventura

Elvis Presley wore a Hamilton Ventura in Blue Hawaii (1961). He owned at least two: the film watch, later fitted to a bracelet, and a white-gold, black-dial Ventura he bought on Christmas Eve 1965 and kept for the rest of his life. He also reportedly gave Venturas to members of his inner circle, the “Memphis Mafia.”

The Elvis connection has shaped the Ventura ever since. For Presley's 80th birthday in 2015, Hamilton released the Ventura Elvis80 , with an automatic H-10 movement (80-hour power reserve) and quartz versions, and the 2017 60th-anniversary models included another nod to the King. The Elvis80 Skeleton is now among the most expensive Venturas.

Men in Black and Beyond

The Ventura found a new generation in Men in Black (1997), where Agents J and K (Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones) wore the Ventura Quartz (H24411732). It returned in all four films: the Ventura Chrono Quartz in MIB II (2002), the Ventura XXL in MIB 3 (2012), and the Ventura Quartz and Ventura Auto in Men in Black: International (2019). In 2024 two Ventura Dune limited editions accompanied Hamilton's custom prop for Dune: Part Two.

The Modern Ventura

Hamilton reissued the Ventura in 1988 , and it has stayed in production ever since, mostly with quartz movements. The Ventura XXL Bright (2022) put a 47.6mm black PVD case around a luminous dial (US$1,495), and the Ventura Edge Skeleton (2025) uses the skeletonised automatic H-10-S in a 51 × 47.1mm case (US$2,025 in PVD).

Model Reference Movement Price (US)
Ventura Quartz H24211732 Quartz $1,075
Ventura S Quartz H24211170 / H24211130 Quartz $1,075
Ventura Quartz 32 × 50mm H24411143 Quartz $1,075
Ventura XXL Bright — Quartz $1,495 (launch)
Ventura Edge Skeleton H24645330 Automatic H-10-S $2,025

How It Compares

The Ventura has no direct rival: it is a design icon with a famous story rather than a technical tool watch. Buyers looking for Hamilton's mechanical heritage at a lower price should look at the Hamilton Khaki Field, while the Hamilton American Classic covers Hamilton's other shaped Art Deco cases.
