Ford v Ferrari Watches: Shelby's Carrera, Miles' Autavia and What Is Wrong With Both
Ford v Ferrari Watches: Shelby's Carrera, Miles' Autavia and What Is Wrong With Both
Ford v Ferrari (released as Le Mans '66 in much of Europe) is a film about a race, so it is no surprise that it is also a film with two very good chronographs. Carroll Shelby wears a Heuer Carrera, Ken Miles a Heuer Autavia, and TAG Heuer has confirmed it supplied both. This guide covers what each watch is, how well the identification is documented, why neither is strictly correct for the 1960s setting, and what the real Shelby and Miles actually wore.
The short answer
Two watches are identified, both made by Heuer: Shelby's Carrera ref. 7753 SN (white dial, black registers) and Miles' Autavia ref. 2446 (black dial, white registers). TAG Heuer confirmed supplying them, according to OnTheDash. Both are later than the film's mostly 1966 setting: the 7753 dates to about 1970 and the 2446 variant to 1968. No other principal character has an identified watch, and we found no watch that drives the plot. The real Miles and Shelby are not documented in Heuer watches.
Who wears what: quick reference
| Character (actor) | Watches |
|---|---|
| Carroll Shelby(Matt Damon) | Heuer Carrera chronograph (white panda dial) |
| Ken Miles(Christian Bale) | Heuer Autavia chronograph (black dial) |
| Everyone else: Iacocca, Ford II, Beebe, Enzo Ferrari and the Mileses(Jon Bernthal, Tracy Letts, Josh Lucas, Remo Girone, Caitriona Balfe, Noah Jupe) | No documented watch |
| Real-world Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby (not the film)(real life) | Breitling Co-Pilot (Miles' regular wear); Rolex Milgauss, smooth bezel (prize for the 1965 Daytona Continental); Rolex Oyster, two-tone (Shelby); Heuer Carrera 45 Dato with Cobra-logo dial (Shelby special order) |
How we label the evidence
Confirmed means a costume designer, prop department, the brand or the show itself said so, or multiple reputable outlets agree and cite a source. Reported means a single reputable outlet or database reports it. We leave out other fan speculation, and where sources disagree we say so. All prices are in US dollars and are indicative; check current listings before buying.
Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon)
Shelby is the showman of the story, and his watch is the film's clearest piece of period-flavoured styling: a white-dial two-register chronograph with black subdials, the so-called panda look. OnTheDash identified it from the case side and lug profile as a Heuer Carrera 7753 SN, and reported that TAG Heuer confirmed it supplied the watches for Damon and Bale after the article ran. Hodinkee, as relayed by a Crown & Caliber repost that we saw only in a search summary, says the costume team asked TAG Heuer for watches and pit stopwatches, and that the brand's heritage team sent period pieces. Watchonista gives the 7753 SN as about 1970, with a Valjoux 7730 movement and a 30-minute counter.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heuer Carrera chronograph (white panda dial) | 7753 SN | Confirmed | Worn by Shelby. No source we found gives a specific scene. About 1970, so later than the film's 1966 setting | Vintage: no dated 2026 USD sale verified; low-to-mid five figures is plausible but not firmly sourced. Modern 7753 SN-inspired Carrera Glassbox: $6,650 (Worn & Wound, 2024) |
A note on the numbers. A Phillips sale of a 7753 with a Gay Freres bracelet at $17,640 against a $6,000 to $12,000 estimate turned up in a search result, but we could not verify the sale date or lot, so treat it as unconfirmed. A Reddit listing at $10,995 was also undated. The modern Glassbox is a reissue, not the film watch, and Watchtime lists it at CHF 7,500. Check tagheuer.com and current auction results before buying.
Ken Miles (Christian Bale)
Miles' watch is quieter, which suits the character. OnTheDash identifies a Heuer Autavia ref. 2446 with a black dial, white registers and a tachymeter bezel, in the style of the third-execution dial, and notes that Bale often wears it dial-inward and has no watch in most scenes. Monochrome says he wears an Autavia in a couple of scenes. Watchonista describes a 1968 model with smaller registers, a narrower bezel and stick hands. Hodinkee, via the Crown & Caliber repost, puts the reference on the underside of Bale's wrist. The exact sub-variant is reported rather than confirmed, and OnTheDash flags an unresolved question about the bezel.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heuer Autavia chronograph (black dial) | 2446 (sub-variant per OnTheDash: 2446 T, third-execution dial) | Confirmed | Worn by Miles in a couple of scenes, often dial-inward. TAG Heuer supply confirmed; sub-variant REPORTED. Introduced 1968, so also early for 1966 | Dated benchmarks, not live: EUR 8,800 for a 2446M c.1968 (Uhren-Muser, May 2023); EUR 15,400 for a 2446C c.1970 (Uhren-Muser, Nov 2023); GBP 19,125 for a 2446 “Tachy” c.1965 (Bonhams London, Feb 2023); Sotheby's Dec 2024 estimate USD 15,000 to 30,000 for a 2446 Rindt (hammer unknown) |
The price points above come from search summaries, are in the currencies of the sales and have not been converted. The Autavia was introduced in 1962 and was the first Heuer chronograph offered with an optional tachymeter bezel, per Watchonista.
Everyone else: Iacocca, Ford II, Beebe, Enzo Ferrari and the Mileses (Jon Bernthal, Tracy Letts, Josh Lucas, Remo Girone, Caitriona Balfe, Noah Jupe)
We found no watch identified for any other character. The IMWDb film page lists only the Carrera, and the costume write-ups we found cover suits and ties rather than watches: the Ford executives in grey, shiny suits and skinny ties, the Ferrari side in warmer colours and wider ties. Costume designer Daniel Orlandi is credited, but no source we found says he personally chose the watches. We have not claimed watches for these characters, and a styling blog that suggested period-plausible picks is speculation, so we have left it out.
Real-world Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby (not the film) (real life)
This section is real history, not what the actors wear. The film's Heuers are costume choices: neither man is documented wearing a Heuer. Miles died on August 17, 1966, and Shelby in 2012 at 89. Sources for Miles disagree on details, so each item is labelled.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Breitling Co-Pilot (Miles' regular wear) | 765 per OnTheDash, citing Monochrome's research; disputed | Reported | Monochrome found an April 1966 photo of Miles in a Porsche 906. One Monochrome reader comment (April 2024, unverified) claims the watch was an AVI instead | — |
| Rolex Milgauss, smooth bezel (prize for the 1965 Daytona Continental) | 6541 per Monochrome | Reported | Monochrome says Miles and Lloyd Ruby each received one. Oracle Time says only that Miles had a Rolex given as a Daytona prize, so outlets differ on the model | — |
| Rolex Oyster, two-tone (Shelby) | Not identified | Reported | Shelby was photographed in one when winning the 1959 Le Mans (Sports Illustrated photo, per Monochrome) and again in 1964. OnTheDash says he usually wore no watch, occasionally a Rolex | — |
| Heuer Carrera 45 Dato with Cobra-logo dial (Shelby special order) | Not identified | Uncertain | Per OnTheDash only, not independently checked, and not shown in the film | — |
Monochrome's author saw no photographs of Shelby in a Heuer chronograph, and Oracle Time makes the same point for both men. Oracle Time also suggests, as the author's own idea rather than a documented fact, that Miles' friendship with Steve McQueen may have pointed the costume team toward Heuer.
Why the film's watches are too late for 1966
The film is set mostly in 1965 and 1966. The Carrera 7753 SN dates to about 1970 and the Autavia 2446 variant to 1968, a point raised by OnTheDash, Monochrome, Watchonista and Oracle Time. Hodinkee's account, as relayed to us, credits the costume team's request and TAG Heuer's heritage department with the choice, so the brand supplied what its archive had rather than a 1966 replica. Nobody, including the costume designer, director or either lead, was found on record about the watches.
There is also no watch in the plot. We found no source tying a specific watch to a scene or story beat. Pit stopwatches were reportedly requested from Heuer, but no source we read names a model on screen, and the slowdown at Le Mans is a finish-order plot point, not a watch item. For the same sort of question in another film, see our guide to James Bond watches, and for more on the brand see TAG Heuer and vintage Heuer.

Myths and mix-ups, corrected
- “The film's watches are period-correct for 1966.” No. The Carrera 7753 SN is from about 1970 and the Autavia 2446 variant from 1968.
- “The real Shelby and Miles wore Heuers.” Neither is documented in a Heuer. Miles reportedly wore a Breitling Co-Pilot (disputed) and received a Rolex as a prize; Shelby leaned toward Rolex.
- “Miles' Daytona prize was a Rolex Daytona.” Sources conflict on the model. Monochrome says a Milgauss 6541 from the 1965 Daytona Continental, while other outlets say only “a Rolex”.
- “Costume designer Daniel Orlandi chose the watches.” No source we found says so. The Hodinkee-relayed account credits the costume team approaching TAG Heuer.
- “There was a TAG Heuer tie-in or limited edition.” We found no evidence of a marketing campaign or special edition tied to the film.
- “The Heuer Film-Master is from this film.” TAG Heuer's article on the Film-Master does not mention Ford v Ferrari.
