Pulp Fiction Watches: Vincent's Timex Q and Butch's Gold Heirloom
Pulp Fiction Watches: Vincent's Timex Q and Butch's Gold Heirloom
Pulp Fiction (1994) has two famous watches, and they are different watches. One is the gold heirloom that Captain Koons delivers to young Butch in a four-minute monologue and that sends Butch back into his apartment, and the other is the cheap quartz Timex that Vincent Vega is reported to wear on his left wrist. This guide goes character by character, covers the heirloom as a plot item, and labels how well each identification is documented. Every watch here is Reported , not confirmed.
The short answer
We found no source in which costume designer Betsy Heimann , the prop department or Quentin Tarantino names any watch, so nothing on this page reaches Confirmed. Vincent's Timex Q ref. 989502 is reported by two outlets, and Winston Wolfe's Gucci 3000.2.M by one. The gold heirloom is reported as a Lancet trench watch , an identification that traces to a single blog and is repeated elsewhere without a primary source. Jules is reported to wear no watch.
Who wears what: quick reference
| Character (actor) | Watches |
|---|---|
| Vincent Vega(John Travolta) | Timex Q (the “Red Nebula” model); Q Timex Red Vega 1978 Reissue (modern tie-in, not the screen watch) |
| Butch Coolidge(Bruce Willis) | Gold trench watch (reported as a Lancet) |
| Winston Wolfe(Harvey Keitel) | Gucci 3000.2.M (also cited as 3300M) |
| Jules Winnfield(Samuel L. Jackson) | No documented watch |
| Mia Wallace, Marsellus Wallace and the rest(Uma Thurman, Ving Rhames and others) | No documented watch |
| Watches in the story | The gold heirloom watch (Koons) |
How we label the evidence
Confirmed means a costume designer, prop department, the brand or the show itself said so, or multiple reputable outlets agree and cite a source. Reported means a single reputable outlet or database reports it. We leave out other fan speculation, and where sources disagree we say so. All prices are in US dollars and are indicative; check current listings before buying.
Vincent Vega (John Travolta)
Vincent's watch is a late-1970s fashion quartz piece, a plain, inexpensive choice that fits a look costume designer Betsy Heimann describes as slightly scruffy (she says the linen suit makes him look “kind of a mess”). Worn & Wound says the watch is never clearly shown but appears on Travolta's wrist several times, and the most-cited moment is Vincent turning to speak with Marvin in the back seat of Jules's Chevy Malibu. The same article coined the nickname “Timex Vega.”
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Timex Q (the “Red Nebula” model) | 989502; stainless case, black Fossil-branded leather strap, left wrist | Reported | Reported by BAMF Style and Worn & Wound. It looks black on screen; an auction listing shows a red marbleized dial under a faceted crystal | Original MSRP $59.95 in the late 1970s; vintage examples typically $200–$400 (Worn & Wound, Jan 2026); one screen-worn example reportedly sold at Julien's Auctions for $6,400, per Worn & Wound (lot page not checked, no date given) |
| Q Timex Red Vega 1978 Reissue (modern tie-in, not the screen watch) | TW2Y55700; 38mm, 11mm thick, 50m water resistance | Reported | Timex revived the Vincent watch in February 2026, per Gear Patrol and Worn & Wound | $209 at launch on timex.com; a later report says Timex US lists $219 but out of stock, and the EU restocked at EUR 209. Treat $209–$219 as indicative, October 11, 2026 |
Two details are unresolved. BAMF gives the case as 38mm and Worn & Wound as 37mm, and we could not settle which is right (the reissue is 38mm). Worn & Wound also judges the screen-worn example a 1979 model rather than 1978 from case and dial variations, which is the author's own assessment. Worn & Wound advises buying a vintage Timex Q only with a tested working movement, since many are fragile.
Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis)
Butch's only identified watch is the gold heirloom itself, which BAMF Style describes on a steel expanding bracelet on his wrist. We found no separate everyday watch for Butch in any source. Because the same watch drives the plot, the full treatment is in the next section.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold trench watch (reported as a Lancet) | Not identified beyond brand; sources conflict on model identity | Reported | Worn by Butch through the film; see “Watches in the story” below | Dealer asking prices for comparable Lancets, not sales: about $2,700–$3,400 (1stDibs). No sale of a solid gold Lancet trench watch found |
Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel)
The fixer who arrives to clean up the mess with Marvin wears a gold-plated dress watch, in keeping with a character who is all calm and polish.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gucci 3000.2.M (also cited as 3300M) | 3000.2.M per BAMF Style; Worn & Wound mentions a “Gucci 3300M” | Reported | BAMF describes a quartz with a yellow gold-plated case, black baton dial, black Roman numerals engraved on the bezel and a gold link bracelet | Used market only, discontinued. Roughly $130–$340 asking or sold on eBay and WatchPatrol, plus one outlier ask of $1,950 (search summary, October 11, 2026, mixed dates) |
The model number is unresolved. Worn & Wound's mention is a parenthetical that does not say which character wears it, and resale listings use both numbers, so treat the number as provisional. We did not verify watch-specific scene detail beyond BAMF's description.
Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson)
BAMF Style reports that, appropriate to his character, Jules does not wear a watch. His accessories are a large gold bracelet on his left wrist, a large twisted gold pinky ring on his right pinky and a gold neck chain with a “J” pendant. This is a single-source report.
Mia Wallace, Marsellus Wallace and the rest (Uma Thurman, Ving Rhames and others)
We found no watch identified for Mia, Marsellus or any other character in any source we could read. Heimann's interviews do not discuss watches, and Worn & Wound names only the Timex, the Lancet and the Gucci. We make no claim about the rest of the cast.
Watches in the story
One watch drives a whole storyline. In the Butch segment, Captain Koons (Christopher Walken) gives the young boy a gold watch that belonged to Butch's father, who died in a POW camp in the Vietnam War. As an adult, Butch plans to flee Los Angeles with Fabienne, finds she has left the watch behind and goes back to his apartment for it, which leads to his encounter with Vincent. Per Wikipedia, Roger Avary created the basis for the “Gold Watch” storyline. We found no other plot watch.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | In the story | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The gold heirloom watch (Koons) | Reported as a Lancet (Langendorf) yellow-gold trench watch; model not given | Reported | BAMF Style says it “has been identified as” a Lancet with a white dial, faded red numerals and a 6:00 subdial, on a steel expanding bracelet. Esquire Middle East and Mr Porter also call it a gold WWI Lancet trench watch, though we saw those only in search summaries | Indicative, not a sale: a 1915 18k yellow gold Lancet trench-style watch listed at $3,400 on 1stDibs (dealer asking); a silver Lancet campaign-style at $2,700 asking |
The Lancet identification is Reported, not Confirmed. It originates from one fan blog and has been repeated by others without a primary source, and we found no statement from the prop department on who sourced the watch or whether it is an authentic antique or a replica. Lancet was a short-lived Langendorf brand, and Langendorf later introduced Lanco in the late 1950s. BAMF also notes that Koons's claim that Langendorf made the first wristwatch is incorrect. The monologue's family chain is secondhand for us: a watch bought in a Knoxville general store around the turn of the century, carried through two world wars, then by Butch's father, and hidden by Koons until he could hand it over. How long Koons hid it differs between the sources we saw (UNCERTAIN), so check the film before quoting numbers.
The “true Pulp Fiction watch” debate
Gear Patrol headlined Timex's 2026 reissue as the “Pulp Fiction watch, no, not that one,” and Worn & Wound says the Lancet is often considered the true Pulp Fiction watch. Both claims are right in different senses: the Lancet is the watch the story is about, while the Timex Q is the one actually reported on a character's wrist for much of the film. One is a century-old heirloom of unknown real-world provenance, the other a $59.95 quartz that has become a collector's piece.
Neither is documented by the people who made the film. Heimann has spoken about Vincent's bolo tie and Mia's white shirt, not about watches. For other films where a watch carries the story, see our guide to James Bond watches, and for how the Timex Q fits its brand, see the Timex Q history.
Get the look for less
Real-world watches that echo the ones above, with indicative US prices. These are editorial suggestions, not watches from the film.
| Watch | Why it fits | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|
| Q Timex Red Vega 1978 Reissue | Timex's own revival of the Vincent watch | $209–$219 (October 11, 2026) |
| Vintage Timex Q, tested movement | The original late-1970s quartz Vincent is reported to wear | ~$200–$400 (Worn & Wound, Jan 2026) |
| Used Gucci gold-plated quartz dress watch | Winston Wolfe's look, with the model number still unsettled | ~$130–$340 used |
Myths and mix-ups, corrected
- “Captain Koons is Butch's father.” No. Per Wikipedia, Koons gives Butch the watch that belonged to Butch's father, and was a fellow POW with him.
- “The Lancet is a confirmed prop.” It is Reported only. The identification traces back to one blog, with no prop-department statement we could find.
- “Vincent wears the heirloom, or Butch wears the Timex.” Reported as the reverse: Vincent wears the Timex Q, and Butch has the gold watch.
- “Jules wears a watch.” BAMF reports he does not; his gold jewelry is a bracelet, a pinky ring and a chain.
- “The Timex is a 38mm watch.” Sources conflict: BAMF says 38mm, Worn & Wound says 37mm. The 2026 reissue is 38mm.
- “Winston's Gucci is definitely the 3000.2.M.” BAMF says so, but Worn & Wound cites a 3300M and resale listings use both.
