Niki Lauda's Watches: The Gold Heuer Carrera and the Monza
Niki Lauda's Watches: The Gold Heuer Carrera and the Monza
The sources we could read tie Niki Lauda to one brand: Heuer . Heuer was Ferrari's official timekeeper from 1971, and its gold Carrera 1158CHN is the watch most often linked to him, with a photograph from the 1976 Italian Grand Prix. The Heuer Monza was made in his honour. Beyond that the record is thin: no Lauda-owned watch has turned up at auction, and a Rolex sighting rests on one outlet. This guide sets out what is documented, what is dealer talk, and how it differs from what Daniel Brühl wears in Rush.
The short answer
The best-supported Lauda watch is the gold Heuer Carrera 1158CHN , given to Ferrari drivers by Jack Heuer; onthedash shows it in a 1976 photograph and two Phillips catalogues name Lauda among the drivers who wore the reference. The Heuer Monza is reported as a tribute to his 1975 title. A Rolex GMT-Master 16700 sighting is uncertain . We found no Longines, Parmigiani or other brand link, and no dated USD price for a Lauda-linked Carrera.

How we label the evidence
Confirmed means a costume designer, prop department, the brand or the show itself said so, or multiple reputable outlets agree and cite a source. Reported means a single reputable outlet or database reports it. We leave out other fan speculation, and where sources disagree we say so. All prices are in US dollars and are indicative; check current listings before buying.
The Ferrari years (1971 to 1979 (Heuer deal))
Heuer became Official Timekeeper of Scuderia Ferrari in 1971, the first watchmaker to partner with an F1 team, per Time+Tide. onthedash says each Ferrari driver wore a Heuer-logo patch and received an 18k gold Carrera from Jack Heuer in return. For Lauda it lists 1976.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where it's documented | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heuer Carrera, 18k gold, champagne dial, black registers | 1158CHN | Reported | onthedash says Heuer gave it to Lauda as a member of the Ferrari team, and shows him wearing it with James Hunt at the 1976 Italian GP, about six weeks after the Nürburgring crash. Phillips catalogue essays name Lauda among drivers who wore the reference | Phillips results for other examples: CHF 30,000 (lot 177, Geneva Watch Auction: NINE) and CHF 35,000 (lot 39, Crosthwaite & Gavin Collection); sale dates not shown on the lot pages. We have no dated USD figure |
The receipt date is not firmly documented. Boss Hunting says he is “understood to have been given” the watch as early as 1976 and cites onthedash; dealer listings say “championship years” without evidence. A 2004 TAG Heuer brochure, quoted by onthedash, says the gold Carreras were made in a limited series of 150. One search summary repeats a claim that each watch was engraved with the driver's blood group; we could not confirm it, so we do not rely on it. Ronnie Peterson's example is reported to have sold at Sotheby's in May 2016 for CHF 225,000, but that is a provenance premium and is from a search summary only.
The Monza tribute (1975 to 1976)
Grail Watch Wiki says Heuer's self-winding Monza was dedicated to Lauda in memory of his third place at the 1975 Italian GP on September 7, 1975, the race that secured his first title. Time+Tide says the Monza was introduced in 1976. We therefore date it 1975 to 1976.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where it's documented | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heuer Monza chronograph, all-black case and dial with red accents, Heuer 11 then Heuer 15 | 150.501 (dealer listing) | Reported | Produced until 1978, per Grail Watch Wiki. A dealer listing says it was launched to celebrate Lauda's win at the 1975 Monza GP; that is a seller claim | Original price about $219 and a used sale near $2,955 appear only in search summaries; we do not quote a market range |
The Monza name had been used on a different pillow-shaped Heuer monopusher in 1930, so “Monza” alone does not date a watch. Our sources conflict on whether the tribute was made in 1975 or 1976, and none is a Heuer archive document.
After racing (1980s onwards)
Little is documented. Boss Hunting says Lauda was seen wearing a Rolex GMT-Master “Pepsi” on the pit wall at the Hungaroring while working with the Austrian Jaguar Premier Performance Division. It gives no date and no photo credit.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where it's documented | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex GMT-Master “Pepsi” | 16700 | Uncertain | Single outlet (Boss Hunting, March 2, 2026), no date or photograph cited. A Spanish forum post also says he privately favoured Rolex; that is anecdote | Boss Hunting links a listing of about 15,000 Australian dollars, undated; not a USD price |
| Rolex Daytona 6265 and IWC Spitfire Chronograph IW387803 | 6265; IW387803 | Uncertain | Watch Paparazzi, a promotional site with affiliate links, says he was photographed in 2006 in the Daytona and wore the IWC. It cites no photographs or sources | No price sourced |
We treat these as leads, not facts. We found no Lauda interview about his watches, and Wikipedia's article, as far as we read it, names no watch brand.
On screen in Rush (2013)
In Rush (2013) Daniel Brühl wears an original blue Heuer Silverstone lent by TAG Heuer, and Chris Hemsworth as James Hunt wears a gold Carrera. WorldTempus says the film swaps them, because in real life the gold Carrera is the watch linked to Lauda.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where it's documented | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heuer Silverstone (film) | Not stated | Confirmed | TAG Heuer says original vintage watches were used. Reference and scene are not stated | Not a Lauda watch; see our Rush guide |
WorldTempus also says Lauda's original gold Carrera was stolen. That is one source, so we report it as unconfirmed.
The 2026 Monza edition (September 2026)
TAG Heuer unveiled a Monza Flyback Chronograph before the 2026 Italian GP, marking 50 years of the Monza and Lauda's 1975 title with Ferrari.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where it's documented | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronograph, 42 mm forged carbon, Calibre TH20-12 | CR5092.FC8372 | Confirmed | 500 numbered pieces, matte black dial with red accents, available from September 2026 (Time+Tide, September 1, 2026) | $13,400 retail (September 2026) |
Other Monza re-editions include a 2001 Calibre 36 version and a 2011 limited edition of 1,911 pieces, per Grail Watch Wiki; neither is Lauda-specific.
Context: why Heuer, and why the record is thin
A sponsorship, not an ambassadorship. Heuer's tie was to Ferrari. onthedash says the brand supplied timing equipment from 1971 to 1979 and each driver wore a Heuer patch. In May 1976 a steel Carrera sold for $236 and the gold one for $1,279 on a strap, per the same source. Nothing we read describes a personal Lauda contract with Heuer.
What is missing. No Lauda-worn watch has sold at auction in anything we found, and we could not open the Fratello article on the gold Carrera. Dealer listings use his name as a selling point without evidence. Read “Niki Lauda Carrera” in a title as marketing unless it comes with provenance.

Myths and mix-ups, corrected
- “Lauda wore a Longines or Parmigiani.” We found no source for any link between Lauda and Longines, Parmigiani, Richard Mille or Hublot.
- “In Rush Lauda wears his own watch.” He wears a blue Silverstone on loan from TAG Heuer. The gold Carrera is the real-life Lauda link, and the film gives that to Hunt.
- “Every Ferrari driver's gold Carrera was engraved with a blood group.” The gift is documented by onthedash and Phillips. The blood-group detail comes from one source we could not verify.
- “The Monza was launched in 1975.” Grail Watch Wiki says 1975; Time+Tide says it was introduced in 1976. Treat it as 1975 to 1976.
- “The Boss Hunting prices are in dollars.” Its Chrono24 links are in Australian dollars. They are undated listings, not sales.

Some details come from search summaries and are flagged. Prices are in the currency stated by the source; no dated USD price exists for a Lauda-linked Carrera in what we read.
