TAG Heuer and Motorsport: Racing Partnerships from 1971 to Today

TAG Heuer and Motorsport

Heuer's relationship with motorsport did not begin with a sponsorship contract. It began with a friendship. Jack Heuer met Jo Siffert — Swiss Formula 1 driver, winner of two Grands Prix — through personal social connections. Siffert wore Heuer watches because he knew Jack Heuer, not because he was paid to. The commercial relationship formalised what was already true. That sequence — genuine connection first, commercial arrangement second — defined how Heuer entered Formula 1 and how its motorsport identity was established. Everything that followed built on that foundation.

Jo Siffert (Josef Siffert, 1936–1971) was a Swiss Formula 1 driver who won two Grands Prix (the 1968 British Grand Prix and the 1971 Austrian Grand Prix). He raced for Lotus, Porsche, and eventually for the BRM team under Rob Walker.

Jack Heuer chose Siffert as Heuer's first brand ambassador based on a personal relationship — Siffert was known to Jack socially through the Swiss motorsport community. Jack Heuer later described the decision as "one of the best marketing moves I ever made." Siffert gave Heuer access to the closed world of Formula 1, where existing relationships controlled sponsorship opportunities. Without Siffert's introduction, the Ferrari partnership that followed would not have been possible.

Siffert wore the Autavia wristwatch — both the manual-wind ref. 2446 variants and, after 1969, the automatic ref. 1163T. The white-dial Autavia variants associated with Siffert became collector references in their own right, designated "Siffert Autavias."

Siffert died in a non-championship Formula 1 race at Brands Hatch on 24 October 1971 — the same year the Ferrari sponsorship began. A brake failure at high speed led to a fatal accident. He was 35 years old. His death preceded Heuer's Ferrari era by only months; the relationship he had built opened a door he would not live to walk through alongside the brand.

Heuer became the first watch brand to sponsor a Formula 1 team when it partnered with Scuderia Ferrari in 1971 . The Ferrari logo appeared on the Heuer watch faces and advertising for the first time that year; Heuer's name appeared on the Ferrari cars.

During the Heuer-Ferrari partnership, Ferrari won multiple World Championships:

  • 1975 : Niki Lauda (drivers' title), Ferrari (constructors' title)
  • 1977 : Niki Lauda (drivers' title)
  • 1979 : Jody Scheckter (drivers' title), Ferrari (constructors' title)

The partnership gave Heuer its most prominent Formula 1 presence during the sport's transition into the television era — the period in which Grand Prix racing moved from a specialist sport to a global broadcast phenomenon. Heuer's branding was visible on the winning cars during this transition.

The TAG Group, which acquired Heuer in 1985, had established its motorsport credentials independently. From 1983 to 1987 , the Porsche TAG turbo engines — financed and named by the TAG Group — powered the McLaren Formula 1 cars. These engines won:

  • 1984 Constructors' Championship (McLaren-TAG Porsche)
  • 1985 Constructors' Championship (McLaren-TAG Porsche)
  • 1986 Constructors' Championship (McLaren-TAG Porsche)

Drivers Niki Lauda (1984) and Alain Prost (1985, 1986) won drivers' titles in these cars.

When TAG acquired Heuer in 1985 and the brand became TAG Heuer , the McLaren connection was immediate and prominent. TAG Heuer became McLaren's official watch and timing partner — a partnership that lasted approximately 30 years , through the eras of:

  • Ayrton Senna (McLaren 1988–1993, World Champion 1988, 1990, 1991)
  • Mika Häkkinen (McLaren World Champion 1998, 1999)
  • Lewis Hamilton (McLaren 2007–2012, World Champion 2008 with McLaren)

Senna's association with TAG Heuer became the most significant celebrity endorsement in the brand's history — formalised commercially in 1993 , the year before his death at Imola.

Red Bull Racing — 2016 to Present

In 2016 , TAG Heuer replaced its McLaren partnership with Red Bull Racing as its primary Formula 1 team partner. Red Bull Racing had emerged as the dominant technical force in Formula 1 under Adrian Newey and team principal Christian Horner, winning four consecutive Constructors' Championships from 2010 to 2013.

The Red Bull partnership continued through the extraordinary era of Max Verstappen — World Champion in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 in Red Bull cars. TAG Heuer's branding has been on the world championship-winning car in four of the last five seasons.

In 2025 , TAG Heuer returned as the Official Timekeeper of Formula 1 as part of a broader LVMH–Formula 1 partnership. LVMH became Formula 1's premier partner, with TAG Heuer taking the timing role and Louis Vuitton taking the title partner role for the championship.

As Official Timekeeper, TAG Heuer provides:
- Precision timing systems for all 24 races on the calendar
- Trackside timing displays and broadcast timing graphics
- Championship and lap record data

In the same year, TAG Heuer became the first-ever title sponsor of the Monaco Grand Prix — an arrangement with the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM). The Monaco Grand Prix had never previously carried a title sponsor. The coincidence with the Monaco watch's 56-year history — the watch named after the race now sponsoring the race — is the kind of brand narrative that marketing teams spend careers attempting to engineer.
