Mad Men Watches: Every Character's Watch, and What It Says
Mad Men Watches: Every Character's Watch, and What It Says
Mad Men is the rare show where the watches were chosen with period in mind. Don Draper's watch changes as his career does, Roger Sterling wears a Tudor that suits his showman streak, and Pete Campbell wears a Hamilton that his father-in-law might have given him. This guide goes character by character, labels how well each watch is documented, and corrects the myths, starting with the biggest: the costume designer did not choose them.
The short answer
The watches were sourced by the prop department (prop master Ellen Freund) with vintage dealer Derek Dier , not by costume designer Janie Bryant. The best-documented are Don's Omega Seamaster DeVille from season 5, Roger's Tudor Oyster Prince “Tuxedo” , and Pete's Hamilton “Sputnik” . Other watches, including Don's Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox and Reverso, are reported by collectors but have no production source, and the Rolex Explorer often attributed to Don is disputed.
Who wears what: quick reference
| Character (actor) | Watches |

| Roger Sterling(John Slattery) | Tudor Oyster Prince “Tuxedo” (self-winding, black-and-silver dial) |
| Pete Campbell(Vincent Kartheiser) | Hamilton “Sputnik” (gold-filled, self-winding, c. 1957) |

How we label the evidence
Confirmed means a costume designer, prop department, the brand or the show itself said so, or multiple reputable outlets agree and cite a source. Reported means a single reputable outlet reports it. We leave out fan speculation, and where sources disagree we say so. All prices are in US dollars and are indicative; check current listings before buying.
Don Draper (Jon Hamm)
Collectors read Don's watches as a career: a Jaeger-LeCoultre alarm watch, then a gold Reverso after his promotion, and finally a restrained Omega. That progression is the collectors' interpretation, not something the production has stated.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Omega Seamaster DeVille, black dial, date at 3 (c. 1966) | Reference unconfirmed | Confirmed | Season 5 onward to the finale. Dier says Jon Hamm approved it at the fitting; Fratello and Gentleman's Gazette put it at about 34mm | ~$1,200–$1,850 for similar vintage pieces (undated dealer asks) |
| Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox (“Tuxedo”-style dial) | Not identified | Reported | Season 1. Repeated by dealer blogs with no production source; aBlogtoWatch reports the prop was a stand-in case with a different dial | — |
| Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classique, yellow gold | Not identified | Reported | Season 2 onward, per dealer blogs. Betty has the caseback engraved | ~$5,025 pre-owned ask (ref. 250.8.86, undated) |
Collectors have long credited Don with a Rolex Explorer in season 4, but no production source says so, and Gentleman's Gazette notes the pictured watch has a sapphire crystal, which would be wrong for the 1960s. We treat it as unconfirmed.
Roger Sterling (John Slattery)
Prop master Ellen Freund first suggested a Rolex; dealer Derek Dier argued that Tudor, Rolex's lower-priced sister, suited Roger better. Dier describes the result as brash yet refined.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tudor Oyster Prince “Tuxedo” (self-winding, black-and-silver dial) | 7967 or 7950 (sources conflict) | Confirmed | The last three seasons, per Dier, with others placing it in seasons 5 and 6. Dier says he coined “Tudor Tuxedo” | No current price found (collector piece) |
We confirm the model and dial, not the reference. A Phillips lot cites reference 7950, but that is a gold watch, not the steel Oyster Prince most accounts describe.
Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser)
Dier chose a vintage Hamilton because the opportunist Pete would wear a watch from his father-in-law.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamilton “Sputnik” (gold-filled, self-winding, c. 1957) | K454-style | Confirmed | Seasons 5 and 6, per Dier. About 34 by 40mm. “Sputnik” is a collector nickname, not an official Hamilton name | ~$600 asks (undated eBay listing) |
Despite the frequent confusion, this is a mechanical automatic, not a Hamilton Electric.
Megan Draper (Jessica Paré)
Dier says he chose it for “youth and modernity,” to the prop master's brief.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jules Jurgensen, 14k white gold, ellipse case, diamond-set | Not identified | Confirmed | No season or episode is documented | No price found |
Ken Cosgrove (Aaron Staton)
Ken is given a Hamilton by a client in season 3 and briefly shows it off.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamilton Electric (a client gift) | Model not identified | Reported | Season 3 (set in 1963), a brief appearance. Some say it is a Ventura; that is unverified | — |
Bert Cooper (Robert Morse)
Bert's watch is as plain as his sock-footed office.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steel watch on a leather strap | Brand not identified | Reported | One outlet (Gentleman's Gazette), visual description only | — |
Lane Pryce (Jared Harris)
Lane, the British finance man, carries a pocket watch rather than a wristwatch.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pocket watch | Brand not identified | Reported | One outlet (Gentleman's Gazette) | — |
Sally Draper (Kiernan Shipka)
A child's watch with a cartoon face.
| Watch | Reference | Evidence | Where you see it | Price (US) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| “Merlin the Magic Mouse” watch | Brand not identified | Reported | Season 6. Reported by Dier only | — |
Joan Holloway (Christina Hendricks)
No personal watch for Joan is documented. The pink, diamond-set Hamilton ladies' watch seen in season 6 belongs to a Mary Kay friend, not to Joan.
Who chose the watches, and the tributes they inspired
The best source is Derek Dier , a Toronto vintage-watch dealer who says prop master Ellen Freund phoned him for the lead characters' watches with about 24 hours to deliver them. Costume designer Janie Bryant, who dressed the cast, has not been reported naming any on-screen watch. Freund has admitted that wrong-period watches sometimes slipped onto the show.
The Reverso tribute. In 2012 Jaeger-LeCoultre made the Grande Reverso Ultra-Thin “Tribute to Mad Men” , limited to 25 pieces, with the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce logo inscribed on the caseback, a walnut box and a letter from Roger Sterling. It cost $8,450, and show creator Matthew Weiner received piece number 1.
Hamilton and Janie Bryant. In November 2021 Bryant designed a capsule for Hamilton, including Intra-Matic Auto Chronos in pink and gold PVD. They were priced at CHF 2,295 in Swiss francs; we could not confirm a US price. It is a Bryant design, not a Mad Men watch.
The Accutron pitch. The season 7 premiere (set in January 1969) has Freddie Rumsen pitching Peggy an Accutron campaign: “It's not a time piece. It's a conversation piece.” Don secretly wrote it. Bulova has never made a Mad Men edition, so any Accutron “Mad Men” marketing is just retailers reusing the pitch.
No reputable outlet we found has documented a watch for Peggy, Betty, Harry, Sal, Duck or Ted .

Myths and mix-ups, corrected
- “Janie Bryant picked Don's watches.” There is no evidence she did. The prop master sourced them, through vintage dealer Derek Dier.
- “Pete's Sputnik is a Hamilton Electric.” No. It is a mechanical self-winding watch. Ken's gift watch is the Electric.
- “Don's Rolex Explorer is period-correct.” Disputed. Gentleman's Gazette notes a sapphire crystal, a later feature, and no production source confirms it.
- “Don's Omega came in season 6.” Sources differ, with Fratello placing it in season 5, episode 6, and Dier saying it was supplied for season 5. We say season 5 onward.
- “Roger's Tudor is reference 7967.” Unresolved. Different sources give 7967 and 7950, so we only say Oyster Prince “Tuxedo”.
- “Joan holds her own pink Hamilton.” It belongs to a Mary Kay friend, a new character, and is on screen for only about 20 seconds.
- “Bulova made a Mad Men watch.” It did not. Only Jaeger-LeCoultre made an official Mad Men tribute.
