Oris Limited Editions: Ocean Conservation and Cultural Partnerships
Oris Limited Editions: Ocean Conservation and Cultural Partnerships
Oris has produced limited editions since the 1990s, but the practice took on a coherent philosophy from the mid-2010s onward: rather than simply producing numbered variants of existing references, Oris began pairing each limited edition with a specific conservation cause, cultural partnership, or social initiative. The result is one of the industry's most consistent track records of cause-linked watchmaking — an approach that critics might call marketing but which has generated millions of dollars in measurable donations and conservation funding.
The Philosophy of Cause-Linked Editions

Oris's approach differs from the standard watch industry limited edition model in one key way: each edition is linked to a named cause with a specific funding commitment. Rather than printing "LE 500 pieces" on a caseback and charging a premium, Oris commits to directing a portion of each watch's sale price to the named partner organisation.
The model was codified under the "Change for the Better"
sustainability framework. Requirements for each limited edition partnership:
- Named conservation or cultural organisation
- Defined funding allocation (typically a per-piece donation or percentage of sales)
- Visual design connection between the watch and the cause
- Transparency about the funding in marketing materials
This framework has been applied to environmental causes (the majority), social causes (Carl Brashear Foundation, Movember), and cultural institutions.
Carl Brashear — The Flagship Human Story

The Carl Brashear Limited Edition (first produced 2016, renewed multiple times) is Oris's most prominent single collaboration. Carl Brashear (1931–2006) became the first African American US Navy master diver despite serving in a segregated military, losing his leg to a shipboard accident in 1966, and fighting for years to return to active duty as an amputee diver. His story was dramatised in the 2000 film Men of Honor.
The Brashear editions feature:
- Copper-brown or bronze dials
referencing naval bronze equipment
- Case backs engraved with Brashear's portrait and name
- Fabric straps incorporating recycled materials
- Proceeds to the Carl Brashear Foundation
, which provides educational support for underprivileged youth
The Brashear edition has been produced in steel (40mm), bronze (43mm), and the smaller 38mm format — making it the longest-running single collaboration in Oris's limited edition history.
Clean Ocean Project

The Clean Ocean Project partnership produced Aquis-based editions featuring dials incorporating recycled ocean plastic . The Clean Ocean Project is a French ocean cleanup initiative. The Oris Clean Ocean editions use PET recovered from ocean waste, processed into dial material with a slightly mottled, organic appearance.
Each Clean Ocean edition is limited to 2,000 pieces. The visual differentiation — the recycled plastic dial — is genuine: no two dials are precisely identical, as the source material varies. This material traceability distinguishes the Clean Ocean editions from watches that use "ocean-themed" colours without material connection to ocean conservation.
Great Barrier Reef Editions

Oris has produced three successive Great Barrier Reef editions, each funding the Reef Restoration Foundation (RRF) — an Australian organisation that cultivates coral fragments in nurseries and transplants them to bleached reef areas.
The Great Barrier Reef III (2021) featured a distinctive coral-pink and orange dial reflecting the colours of healthy reef coral, a 41.5mm Aquis case, and a portion of sales directed to RRF's fragmentation and transplantation programme. The series progression tracks the urgency of reef conservation: each edition was produced against a backdrop of documented mass bleaching events on the Great Barrier Reef.

The Coral Restauration Foundation (CRF) editions are distinct from the Great Barrier Reef series: the CRF operates specifically in the Florida Keys , working to restore the deteriorated Florida Reef — once one of the world's largest barrier reefs. The Oris CRF editions fund coral fragment cultivation in underwater nurseries in the Keys.
These editions typically feature blue or turquoise dials in the Aquis format, limited to 2,000 pieces, with a case back engraving referencing the coral propagation programme.
Hangang River — Seoul

The Aquis Hangang Limited Edition (2021) marked Oris's collaboration with Seoul's efforts to restore and protect the Hangang River — the river running through South Korea's capital. The Hangang edition featured a teal-blue dial with the Hangang River's distinctive turquoise colouration.
The partnership represented Oris's first East Asian conservation collaboration, and the edition sold primarily through Korean distribution. A portion of sales was directed to water quality and river ecosystem restoration in Seoul.
Movember and Social Cause Editions
Movember — the global men's health initiative (prostate cancer, testicular cancer, suicide prevention) — has partnered with Oris for limited Artelier and Big Crown editions. The Movember editions are typically produced in smaller quantities (500–1,000 pieces) and sold primarily online during the November campaign.
These editions demonstrate that Oris's cause-linked model extends beyond environmental conservation to social health causes — though ocean conservation remains the brand's primary focus area.
Hölstein Edition — Annual Series
The Hölstein Edition is an annual limited series produced from a single block of raw steel machined entirely at the Hölstein factory — emphasising Swiss manufacture and the brand's home. Each year's Hölstein Edition is limited to around 1,000 pieces and features a colour or design choice voted on by factory workers. The series is sold exclusively through Oris's own retail channels.
The Hölstein Edition is not tied to a conservation cause but to the factory community — a different kind of authenticity claim, directed inward rather than outward.
Roberto Clemente Edition
The Roberto Clemente limited edition commemorates the Puerto Rican baseball legend (1934–1972) who died in a plane crash while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The edition features imagery referencing Clemente's 3,000th hit and his humanitarian legacy, with proceeds to the Roberto Clemente Foundation.
The Clemente edition parallels the Brashear edition in structure: a historical figure of underrepresented background, a story of perseverance and service, and a Foundation beneficiary.
