Hublot Spirit of Big Bang: The Tonneau Case Interpretation

The Spirit of Big Bang is Hublot's third major case architecture — distinct from the round Big Bang and the round Classic Fusion in its tonneau (barrel) shape. Where the Big Bang is a statement piece and the Classic Fusion is a versatile dress-sport option, the Spirit of Big Bang is a design object: a case shape that carries all of Hublot's material philosophy in a form that reads as the most explicitly art-influenced of the three collections.

The Tonneau Case — Historical Context

The tonneau case — a rectangular or barrel-shaped case with curved sides — is one of watchmaking's oldest non-round case forms, appearing in pocket watches and early wristwatches of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The shape references the French word "tonneau" (barrel or cask): the case sides curve inward at the waist, tapering the case width relative to the lug width.

Notable historical tonneau references include early Cartier wristwatches and various Art Deco-era dress watches. In the 2010s, the tonneau experienced a revival across several brands — Hublot, Richard Mille, and MB&F among them — as an alternative to the dominant round and rectangular case forms.

The Spirit of Big Bang launched at Baselworld 2014 . The tonneau case measured 42mm × 38mm — wider than it is tall, a proportion that emphasises the barrel curvature and distinguishes it visually from both square and round watches.

The design retained the Big Bang's material philosophy: simultaneous use of multiple unconventional materials, screwed bezel elements, and integrated rubber elements. But the tonneau geometry required a completely new case design — the Big Bang's circular bezel elements could not be adapted to a barrel form.

Specification Detail
Case dimensions 42mm × 38mm (standard)
Case height Approximately 14–16mm
Case materials Titanium, black ceramic, king gold, or sapphire
Bezel Screwed, with H-shaped screws
Crystal Curved sapphire
Water resistance 50 metres

The curved sapphire crystal is technically demanding — flat sapphire can be cut from synthetic boules relatively straightforwardly, but curved sapphire requires a different grinding and polishing process. The Spirit of Big Bang's curved crystal follows the tonneau case curvature, requiring more material and more processing than a flat equivalent.

Spirit of Big Bang Tourbillon Sapphire

The most striking Spirit of Big Bang variant is the Tourbillon Carbon Sapphire :

  • Fully transparent sapphire crystal case (front, back, and bezel)
  • Carbon fibre movement plate visible through the case
  • Flying tourbillon at 6 o'clock
  • Rubber strap

The transparent sapphire case turns the watch into a kinetic sculpture: the movement — its carbon plates, tourbillon cage, and gear train — is visible from all directions. The combination of sapphire clarity with carbon fibre's distinctive woven texture is a direct expression of Hublot's Art of Fusion: the most advanced optical material (sapphire) with one of the most recognisable industrial materials (carbon fibre).

Spirit of Big Bang Chronograph — UNICO

The standard complication in the Spirit of Big Bang is the UNICO flyback chronograph (HUB1240):

Specification Detail
Calibre HUB1240
Chronograph Flyback, column-wheel
Power reserve 72 hours
Frequency 28,800 vph
Winding Automatic bidirectional rotor

The UNICO in a tonneau case requires the movement to be adapted to the barrel shape: the movement's gear train layout must be compatible with a non-round case interior. Hublot's solution is a movement sized to fit within the Spirit of Big Bang's barrel case dimensions while maintaining the UNICO's full functionality.

Spirit of Big Bang Meca-10

The Spirit of Big Bang Meca-10 is a manual-wind variant with a 10-day power reserve — achieved through a six-barrel mainspring arrangement that provides exceptional energy storage:

  • Manual-wind movement (HUB1201)
  • 10 days (240 hours) power reserve
  • Power reserve indicator on the dial
  • Six series-coupled barrels visible through the dial

The power reserve indicator in the Meca-10 runs across the lower portion of the dial — a sector display calibrated against 10 day segments. The six-barrel architecture visible through the movement-side dial aperture makes the Meca-10 the most mechanically expressive Spirit of Big Bang variant.

Spirit of Big Bang in the Collection

Priced from approximately €20,000 for titanium references to over €300,000 for sapphire tourbillon variants, the Spirit of Big Bang spans Hublot's full price range. The tonneau case shape gives it a distinct visual identity within the Hublot range — buyers who want Hublot's material credentials in a form that is neither the classic porthole round nor the established Big Bang architecture have the Spirit of Big Bang as their option.
