Patek Philippe Aquanaut vs Patek Philippe Nautilus: Current Models and Pre-Owned Generations
Patek Philippe Aquanaut vs Patek Philippe Nautilus: Current Models and Pre-Owned Generations
The Aquanaut and the Nautilus share a rounded octagonal bezel and a Geneva address, and Patek itself says the Aquanaut's bezel is reminiscent of the Nautilus. They are sold as two different watches. The Aquanaut is the strap watch, with an embossed composite strap and a steel version at $27,257 new. The Nautilus is the bracelet watch, and its steel time-only version is no longer in the catalogue. This page compares the models you can buy new today and the earlier generations that circulate pre-owned.
The short answer
Buy an Aquanaut if you want the lower list price, a softer composite strap and a thin steel case: the 5167A-001 is 8.1 mm thick and lists at $27,257, though pre-owned asks run far above that. Buy a Nautilus if you want the original Genta design on a bracelet, and accept that the only current time-and-date model, the 5811/1G, is white gold at $82,021. Both lean on Patek's 26-330 S C family movement and print 30 m water resistance. The real difference is availability: neither steel sports watch is easy to buy at list.

Current Patek Philippe Aquanaut lineup and variations
Aquanaut prices are US suggested retail prices printed on patek.com product pages, which we fetched on October 15, 2026, and they match the US figures in a Luxury Bazaar article dated February 25, 2026. Nautilus prices are from patek.com product pages fetched on October 14, 2026. Patek cut US list prices by roughly 8.5% on February 1, 2026 (US only, tied to tariffs, per Luxury Bazaar), so any older figure you see is higher. The Aquanaut catalogue shows 20 models, 19 in the current collection and one special series, plus Luce minute repeaters that we could not confirm on the catalogue page. The Nautilus has 44 entries; the table below summarises its families rather than repeating every gem-set reference, and the full list is in our Nautilus vs Royal Oak comparison. Prices are in dollars as printed on patek.com's US pages, which exclude taxes.

Prior generations: what you can buy pre-owned
Both families shed older movements and sizes over time, and both have steel references that left the catalogue. Dates come from dealer guides and price trackers, which sometimes conflict; where they do, we show the range. Pre-owned figures are indicative asks or market estimates from the dated sources named, not guaranteed prices. Aquanaut asks are WristCheck, September 2026, unless noted; Nautilus asks are mainly Estimonia, September 2026, and Loupe, April 2026.

Design lineage: the Nautilus, the Aquanaut and the strap
The Nautilus came first, in 1976, and chronext and Revolution Watch credit it to Gerald Genta. Patek's Aquanaut page describes the Aquanaut's bezel as a rounded octagon reminiscent of the Nautilus, and WatchGuys says the Aquanaut simplified the Nautilus case, dropped its integrated ears and brought a rubber strap to the brand. None of the pages we fetched names an Aquanaut designer or credits Genta with it, so we will not either. A Watch Collecting Lifestyle article (2020) notes that MDM Geneve Hublot had fitted a rubber strap in 1980, so the claim is 'first Patek on rubber', not first anywhere.
Patek calls the Aquanaut's strap a composite material resistant to wear, salt water and UV, with an embossed checkerboard-style pattern that runs from dial to strap; it does not use the word 'tropical' on that page. The earliest 5065A used natural rubber that had to be cut to length, and a replacement strap was quoted at $510 in 2020. The Nautilus took the opposite route: current men's references sit on integrated bracelets. The one steel Aquanaut on a bracelet, the 5167/1A, left the catalogue in February 2025 without an announcement, so the strap-versus-bracelet split is now cleaner than it was.
Read the Aquanaut history for the reference-by-reference story. For design, the practical point is that the Nautilus has flared case sides and horizontal embossing, while the Aquanaut's embossed pattern repeats on the strap.
Movement and wearing experience
On paper the two families overlap more than their prices suggest. The Aquanaut 5167A and the Nautilus 5811/1G both use calibre 26-330 S C: 27 mm wide, 3.32 mm high, 207 parts, 30 jewels, a 21K gold rotor, Gyromax balance and Spiromax hairspring at 4 Hz, with a 35 to 45 hour power reserve (patek.com). Patek prints 30 m water resistance on both pages. Time and Watches reported 120 m for the 5811/1G at launch in 2022, and the Watch Collecting Lifestyle article gives 120 m for the 1998 Aquanaut 5065A, so the current 30 m figure is worth confirming with a dealer if water use matters to you.
Thickness tells you how each wears. The 5167A is 40.8 mm across and 8.1 mm thick; the 5811/1G is 41 mm and 8.2 mm; the retired 5711/1A was 8.3 mm (chronext). The Aquanaut Jumbo 5168G is 42.2 mm and 8.25 mm. Patek's steel chronograph 5968A ships with a second, orange strap. We found no sourced weights for current models, so we make no claim about heft. Complications add thickness quickly on both sides: the Aquanaut Travel Time is 10.2 mm and the chronograph 11.9 mm, while the Nautilus 5990 Travel Time chronograph is 12.53 mm.
Retail, waitlists and the secondary market
Neither family has a formal public waitlist. WatchGuys says Patek has no formal waitlist and that allocation depends on the dealer and the client's relationship and purchase history, while most references are readily available pre-owned. WristCheck describes the 5167A list price as what an allocated client pays after a wait, and says its US retailer quotes the 5968A only in store, to chosen clients. Luxury Bazaar (September 2025) attributes grey-market premiums to limited supply and long waitlists at authorised dealers. We found no dated, official waitlist length for either brand, so treat any number you read as anecdote.
The gap between list and ask is where the two diverge. The Aquanaut 5167A-001 lists at $27,257 and was asking $62,200 to $116,200 in September 2026, roughly 2.3 to 4.3 times list. The Nautilus 5811/1G lists at $82,021 and was asking $155,000 to $185,000, roughly 1.9 to 2.3 times list. The retired steel Nautilus 5711/1A closed its run at $34,890 per Loupe (WristCheck gave $30,620; the sources conflict) and now trades near $105,000 to $135,000 in blue. Generally, if you want to pay list, you need an allocation; if you want a watch next week, you pay the ask.
Buying new versus pre-owned
Buying new means you can only get what Patek catalogues today. For the Aquanaut that includes the steel 5167A-001, the 250-piece 5167A-014 Milano 2026, the 5968A-001 chronograph and the quartz Luce, and for the Nautilus it means the white gold 5811/1G, the 5726/1A and 5990/1A in steel, or the 2026 anniversary series. For both, allocation rather than list price is the barrier.
Pre-owned opens the generations Patek no longer sells: the steel bracelet Aquanaut 5167/1A, the steel Travel Time 5164A, the 5065A Jumbo and 5060A, or the Nautilus 5711/1A, 5712/1A and 3700/1A. The Aquanaut generations are where a buyer can still find a smaller case, such as the 35.6 mm 5060A and 5066A at asks of $45,000 and $54,700, and the 38.8 mm 5165A at about $50,000; the 2020 figure of $25,000 to $35,000 for a 5065A is out of date. On the Nautilus side the steel time-and-date watch now costs well over its final retail, so pre-owned there is a premium purchase, not a discount. Check the reference on the watch against the listing, since the 5167A moved from calibre 324 S C to 26-330 S C around 2021, and confirm box, papers and strap condition.
Which should you buy?
| If you want | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The lowest list price Patek sports watch | Aquanaut 5167A-001 steel, or the 5267/200A Luce quartz | $27,257 and $24,632 new; the 5167A asks far above list pre-owned |
| A steel watch on a bracelet | Nautilus 5726/1A or 5990/1A, or a pre-owned 5711/1A | The steel time-and-date Nautilus is out of the catalogue; the 5726/1A starts at $57,015 |
| The thinnest sports case | Aquanaut 5167A or Nautilus 5811/1G | 8.1 mm against 8.2 mm; the 5811/1G is white gold at $82,021 |
| A strap that goes in the water or the gym | Aquanaut | Composite strap rated by Patek as resistant to salt water and UV; the 5167/1A bracelet version is discontinued |

Myths and mix-ups, corrected
- “The Aquanaut is a cheaper Nautilus.” Its list prices start lower, but the pre-owned 5167A asks run $62,200 to $116,200 against $27,257 list, so it is not cheap to buy in practice.
- “You can still buy a steel Nautilus time-and-date watch.” The steel 5711/1A was discontinued in 2021 and the 5712/1A left the catalogue in early 2025; current steel Nautilus references are the 5726/1A, 5990/1A and ladies' 7118/1A.
- “The Aquanaut was designed by Gerald Genta.” None of the sources we fetched credits Genta with it; he is credited with the Nautilus. Patek says only that the Aquanaut's bezel is reminiscent of the Nautilus.
- “The 5811 is just a steel 5711 replacement.” The 5811/1G is white gold, 41 mm and $82,021.
- “Aquanaut straps are tropical rubber.” Patek describes the current strap as a composite material and does not use the word tropical on its Aquanaut page; the earliest 5065A used natural rubber.

The Nautilus (1976) sits on an integrated bracelet and was designed by Gerald Genta. The Aquanaut (1997) is a strap watch with an embossed composite strap and a rounded octagonal bezel that Patek calls reminiscent of the Nautilus. Both use the 26-330 S C calibre in their time-and-date versions.
Which is cheaper new, the Aquanaut or the Nautilus?
The Aquanaut. The steel 5167A-001 lists at $27,257 and the quartz Luce 5267/200A at $24,632, while the current Nautilus time-and-date watch, the white gold 5811/1G, lists at $82,021 and the cheapest steel men's Nautilus, the 5726A-001, at $57,015.
Is the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167A discontinued?
No. The 5167A-001 is in Patek's catalogue as of October 15, 2026. The steel bracelet version, the 5167/1A, was removed in February 2025.
Does Patek still make a steel Nautilus?
Yes, but not the time-and-date model. The steel 5711/1A was discontinued in 2021 and the 5712/1A left the catalogue in early 2025. Current steel Nautilus references are the 5726/1A annual calendar, the 5990/1A Travel Time chronograph and the ladies' 7118/1A.
How much is a pre-owned Aquanaut 5167A?
WristCheck listed asks of $62,200 to $116,200 in September 2026, against a $27,257 US list price. Luxury Bazaar put the market at $54,000 in September 2025 and WatchGuys at $60,000 to $90,000 in early 2026.
Is there a waitlist for the Patek Aquanaut or Nautilus?
Patek has no formal public waitlist according to WatchGuys; dealers allocate to clients with purchase history. We found no dated official waitlist length for either watch.
Who designed the Patek Philippe Aquanaut?
None of the sources we fetched names an Aquanaut designer. Gerald Genta is credited with the Nautilus, and Patek describes the Aquanaut's bezel as reminiscent of the Nautilus.
Is the Aquanaut strap rubber?
Patek describes it as a composite material that resists wear, salt water and UV, with an embossed pattern. The first 5065A used a natural rubber strap that had to be cut to size.
