Casio Calculator & Databank Watches: From the C-80 to the CA-53W

No watch says "1980s" quite like a Casio calculator watch . For a company founded on calculators, putting one on the wrist was a natural step, and Casio turned the idea into a mass-market product, a cultural icon, and eventually a retro classic that is still sold today.

1980: The C-80

Casio's first calculator watch, the C-80 of 1980, was also the first to become a commercial success. Its innovation was a keypad that could be operated with a fingertip rather than a stylus, giving users eight-digit arithmetic on the wrist. It established the format Casio would refine for the next decade.

Databank: The Wrist Organiser

The Databank line extended the idea from calculation to memory, storing telephone numbers and short memos ("telememo") on the watch. In the era before mobile phones, a Databank was a genuinely useful personal organiser, and the line's dense keypads and multi-line displays made it a symbol of 1980s technology.

The CA-53W and Back to the Future

The CA-53W , introduced in 1988 to succeed the CA-50, became the definitive Casio calculator watch, thanks largely to Hollywood. Marty McFly wore a Casio CA-50 in the original Back to the Future (1985) and the CA-53W in Part II and Part III. The film connection, plus a price that has stayed remarkably low, has kept the CA-53W in production and in demand for more than three decades.

Calculator Watches Today

Casio still sells calculator and Databank models at modest prices, and they have found a new audience as retro "geek chic" accessories. They sit alongside the F-91W and AE-1200 as the most affordable ways into Casio's digital heritage.
