Casio AE-1200 “Casio Royale”: The World-Time Digital

The Casio AE-1200WH is one of the best-value watches available: a world-time digital with a 10-year battery and 100 metres of water resistance for around US$30–40. Enthusiasts call it the "Casio Royale" , a nickname that has nothing to do with Casio's marketing and everything to do with James Bond.

Why "Casio Royale"?

The AE-1200's busy, panelled face resembles the Seiko G757 Sports 100 worn by Roger Moore's James Bond in Octopussy (1983). Collectors began calling the Casio the "Casio Royale" as a play on Casino Royale. The AE-1200 itself has never appeared in a Bond film, while the Seiko it resembles has become a sought-after collectible.

Specifications and Functions

The case measures 45 × 42.1 × 12.5mm and weighs about 39 grams, in black resin with steel pushers and caseback. Water resistance is 100 metres , and a CR2025 battery is rated for 10 years . Its headline feature is world time across 31 time zones and 48 cities, shown on a miniature world map, with a home-time display that keeps the local seconds running. It also offers five daily alarms, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a countdown timer, an automatic calendar and an LED light.

Variants and Mods

Alongside the resin AE-1200WH, Casio offers versions on a steel bracelet. The watch has also become a favourite for modification, with aftermarket metal cases and sapphire crystals turning a US$35 digital into something that looks far more expensive.

How It Compares

Compared with the F-91W, the AE-1200 is larger and far more capable, with world time, 100m water resistance and a much longer battery. Compared with a G-Shock, it is less shock-resistant but cheaper, slimmer and more dress-friendly. For other inexpensive picks, see the best watches under $500.
