Heat (1995) Watches: McCauley's Timex and Hanna's Bulgari

Heat (1995) is a film about people who dress with discipline, and the watches follow suit. Robert De Niro's thief Neil McCauley is reported to wear a cheap black digital Timex. Al Pacino's detective Vincent Hanna is reported to wear a Bulgari Diagono chronograph, and Val Kilmer's Chris Shiherlis appears to wear another Bulgari. This is a thin subject: every identification below comes from blogs and forum members reading screenshots, and we found no statement from the costume department, a brand or the filmmakers. We say how firm each one is.

The short answer

No watch in Heat reaches our top evidence level. The best-supported are Hanna's Bulgari Diagono chronograph (several outlets agree on the brand; the CH35S reference rests on blog identifications) and McCauley's Timex Stealth , traced to a 2018 identification by a WatchUSeek forum member, though one database lists a Casio G-Shock DW-5600 as a close match instead. Shiherlis's watches are hedged, and a Swatch for Sammy Casals is reported by one outlet only. Costume designer Deborah Lynn Scott is credited on the film, but no source credits her or anyone else with choosing the watches.

Who wears what: quick reference

Character (actor) Watches
Neil McCauley(Robert De Niro) Timex Stealth (black Indiglo digital chronograph, 100 m water resistance)
Vincent Hanna(Al Pacino) Bulgari Diagono chronograph (35 mm steel, inverted panda dial, quartz per two sources)
Chris Shiherlis(Val Kilmer) Bulgari Diagono Scuba, two-tone (38 mm); Black digital heart-rate watch (Polar Accurex II, tentative)
Other characters(Wes Studi (Sammy Casals) and the rest of the cast) No documented watch

How we label the evidence

Confirmed means a costume designer, prop department, the brand or the show itself said so, or multiple reputable outlets agree and cite a source. Reported means a single reputable outlet or database reports it. Community-identified means fans identified it from screenshots in a cited community thread, which we flag as unverified. We leave out other fan speculation, and where sources disagree we say so. All prices are in US dollars and are indicative; check current listings before buying.

Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro)

McCauley is a professional thief who lives with almost no possessions. A plain black digital watch suits that, and outlets read it as a deliberate low-profile choice. That reading is interpretation: none of our sources cites a production statement. BAMF Style records that the Timex Stealth identification was made in May 2018 by WatchUSeek contributor “DDickson73”; we could not find the thread itself. Deborah Lynn Scott is the credited costume designer and Marsha Bozeman is named as De Niro's costumer.

Watch Reference Evidence Where you see it Price (US)
Timex Stealth (black Indiglo digital chronograph, 100 m water resistance) 87141 per one outlet Community-identified No specific scene is cited. Boss Hunting lists day, date, second time zone, stopwatch, alarm and Indiglo backlight. The Spotern database instead lists a Casio G-Shock DW-5600 as a “close match” About $50 (Boss Hunting, December 16, 2025; WatchReel, August 19, 2026)

One guide says the watch cost $30 in its introduction and about $50 in its body, so the original price is not settled. The same guide says claims of a second, fancier McCauley watch are unsupported by any costume credit or screenshot, and we found nothing to contradict that.

Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino)

Hanna's Bulgari is the most consistently reported watch in the film. Time+Tide describes a clear shot of the engraved Bulgari bezel during the street shootout between police and the crew. Boss Hunting calls it a surprising choice for a police lieutenant. Whether the film intends the price as a character point is not documented.

Watch Reference Evidence Where you see it Price (US)
Bulgari Diagono chronograph (35 mm steel, inverted panda dial, quartz per two sources) CH35S per Mr Stateless and WatchReel Reported Seen in the shootout. The CH35S reference rests on one blog's screenshot identification, and that reference exists in both quartz and automatic versions About $3,500 (Boss Hunting, December 2025); about $1,500-2,000 (WatchReel, August 2026). Past auction results for the CH35S ran from $1,375 to $3,144 in 2009-2011 (Collectorsquare)

The Diagono line launched in 1988, according to WatchReel. Mr Stateless found second-hand examples from EUR 850 and notes the model is discontinued. We could not find a Bulgari collector reference page, so the dimensions above are blog figures.

Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer)

Kilmer's character appears to have two watches. Before the bank job he wears a gold watch with a black dial; for the robbery he swaps it for a blacked-out digital. Both identifications are hedged by the outlets that make them.

Watch Reference Evidence Where you see it Price (US)
Bulgari Diagono Scuba, two-tone (38 mm) SD38SG per one outlet Reported Worn before the robbery. Boss Hunting says it “appears to be” the two-tone Scuba. BAMF Style says the brand of the gold watch is unconfirmed and treats a Bulgari as fan speculation About $6,250 (Boss Hunting, December 2025, retailer listing); about $2,000-3,000 (WatchReel, August 2026). The two sources disagree
Black digital heart-rate watch (Polar Accurex II, tentative) Not confirmed Uncertain Worn for the robbery and shootout. Boss Hunting says it “looks to be” a Polar Accurex II; BAMF Style does not name a brand and notes a red logo or button under the display About $70 (Boss Hunting, December 2025); about $25 (WatchReel, August 2026)

We found no corroboration of the Polar identification beyond these two outlets.

Other characters (Wes Studi (Sammy Casals) and the rest of the cast)

One outlet, WatchReel, reports a red Swatch Gent GR117 on Wes Studi's Casals and says the identification had not been documented before. It does not explain how it was made and we found no second source, so we treat it as uncertain and do not list it as a watch.

Principal cast per Wikipedia: Jon Voight (Nate), Tom Sizemore (Michael Cheritto), Ashley Judd (Charlene Shiherlis), Amy Brenneman (Eady), Ted Levine (Mike Bosko), Natalie Portman (Lauren Gustafson), Tom Noonan (Kelso) and Kevin Gage (Waingro). No watch is identified for them in any source we could read.

Why the watches matter, and what is not known

No plot watches. The crew takes $1.6 million in bearer bonds and then a $12.2 million bank haul, not jewellery or watches. We found no watch gift, theft or sale in the story.

The cop and the thief. Commentary on the film often sets McCauley's inexpensive digital against Hanna's Bulgari. It is a neat contrast, but it is the critics' reading. Nobody we could find on the production has said it was intended. Mann's film is known for physical detail: technical adviser Andy McNab, a former British SAS sergeant, trained the cast for three months, and the shoot ran 107 days around Los Angeles.

Brand tie-ins. We found no Heat edition from Bulgari or Timex and no brand statement about the film.

What we could not check. The main film-watch database, IMDb and the original 2018 forum thread would not open, and we found no watch-magazine article on the film. If you have a costume-department or brand source, it would change several ratings above. For Timex see our Timex history.

Watches that carry the spirit of the film, with indicative prices. These are editorial suggestions, not the screen watches. We could not verify a current price for the Timex Stealth, which was not listed on Timex's US site on October 14, 2026.

Timex Ironman and Expedition digital watches Indiglo backlit Timex digitals in the same low-key spirit as McCauley's watch; not the same model Timex's current US range runs from about $129 to $549 (timex.com, October 14, 2026, non-Stealth models)
Casio G-Shock 5600 series The model Spotern lists as a close match for McCauley's watch Not checked

Myths and mix-ups, corrected

  • “McCauley wears a G-Shock.” One database lists a Casio G-Shock DW-5600 as a close match, but several outlets repeat the 2018 forum identification of a Timex Stealth. We side with the Timex and say it is a community identification.
  • “McCauley also owns a nicer watch.” One guide says no costume credit or screenshot supports a second watch. We found nothing to the contrary.
  • “The costume designer chose a Timex to show he is a ghost.” A quote to that effect appears on one watch site only and we could not verify it, so we do not use it.
  • “Hanna's watch is definitely a CH35S.” The brand is widely reported; the reference comes from blog identifications, and the CH35S exists in both quartz and automatic versions.
  • “Shiherlis wears a Polar heart-rate monitor.” Tentative. Boss Hunting says it “looks to be” one, and BAMF Style does not name the brand.
  • “Prices in shopping links match the watches.” At least one popular guide links a Speedmaster listing under the Bulgari, so check any listing against the reference.
